First movie I've ever fallen asleep to since childhood. It felt like a theme park ride with no real danger ever present. Uh oh they're about to be eaten, who will save them now? How about now? And now?

The escape from goblin town was especially painful, apparently if you ever need to fight through hundreds of goblins you just use the spin move until you're out.

Lastly, I thought the lines sucked and felt forced and overly dramatic.

Im glad so many people enjoyed the hobbit, but I think my taste is just for less adventury Jack Sparrow type stuff

Thought this as well. Especially the last moments. Felt like they were desperately trying to one-up Sam by forcing all these cheesy dialogues. Though it might have to do with the fact that LotR had more star power and better acting overall.

was it any worse than lord of the rings 2 when they rode out from inside Helm's Deep and were completely untouched by the Orcs?

Watched the dvd screener last night I've seen it twice already in the theaters.

My biggest problem was the lack of downtime, it was like 1 action scene to the next. The only downtime was in Rivendell. By the last action scene, when they were climbing up the tress, I had no more fucks to give. With all the action I didn't have an opportunity to form bonds with the dorfs so I could give a fuck less if they died. I think the storm giant scene was the biggest mistake. That should have been the time to put in some background and learn a bit more about the company instead we were forced to watch that cluster fuck.

I think it was a good movie, but I'm surprised how bad it was. Could have been much better.

I meant to say less jack sparrowy stuff, lol. Like the goblin king makes a joke after his stomach gets sliced open, that's not cool, man, you just got ganked.

I guess that helms deep escape was similarly rediculous, but at least it felt dangerous when you saw it. Like, they say let's ride to our death versus knowing the dwarves would decide they could now fight like macho man when and Star Wars kid their way to victory

Did people honestly expect an epic movie? The book was boring as hell.. like the movie is going to be different? It didn't pick up till the end.

Just saw this yesterday in 3D. Very first scene with old Bilbo seemed like it was at accelerated speed. Definitely caught my attention in a strange way. But then they did the sweeping visual over a city then the dwarf city, and I was blown away. The quality mixed with 3D made you feel like you were some invisible observer in the room watching these events play out in real life. There was something very personal about it. It felt like I was watching the future of cinema and made me excited to see future movies look this good.

Movie dragged like hell.

Since I didn't see it mentioned. FUCK THE SCORE SO MUCH. Every scene the music just went overboard trying to make more and more epic, or tense or whatever, but it was so blatant it just annoyed me.

edit: Also, the Brown Wizard with the rabbits reminded me of this.

No kidding. I almost laughed out loud when they were walking along a path near some big rocks and then! EPIC MOTHERFUCKING SCORE! LOOK! At the PERIL we are in, WALKING! Near some rocks! On a path! *EPIC Score*

the troll scene was fucking hilarious.
Not because the moment was funny, but because of what Bilbo said to the trolls.

How the fuck would they know what this means? I was immediately thrown off from the immersion.

I watched it via screener a couple days ago, and I'm going to watch it again this weekend, just to shore up my ambivalence. I *think* I really dislike Martin Freeman as Bilbo, which comes as a huge surprise because I've likes everything he has done before. Going to give it another go, though. Will post a conclusion then.

Unlike a sprained ankle, this movie does not get better with time.

As to your point that you don't like MF as BB; no worries, none of the characters in this movie have any gravity about them. Not even Gandalf.

It's almost as if PJ sold his soul to the devil to make the first three movies, and all he had left to sell this time was some pocket lint and a used condom.

I'm not sour or anything, but I was hoping for lots more than a 2.5 hour commercial for The Hobbit boxed set of blu-ray discs that will eventually come out.

It's almost as forgettable an effort as King Kong is. Was. Is.

I think Jackson's problem is the success of the first movies has put him in the position of thinking he can do no wrong with respect to translating Tolkien's work to the screen as well as causing the studio to entrust him with the resources and freedom to generate a nice box office return on the effort (which is what ensures that he as a director is given that freedom more often in the future). I think he did as close to perfect as could have possiblly been done onFellowship. I could come up with some minor quibbles but on the whole, I think he smashed it out of the park. As the trilogy progressed though, I think his judgement on the license he took got progressively worse. He's extended it beyond even that now inThe Hobbit.

Tolkien's work has a special place in my heart because they were what exposed me to fantasy has a kid, but I'm no purist who get's all insulted over even the slightest change. Many things need to be changed in order to make the stories workable or even better (*gasp*) as motion pictures. His judgement over what and how to change them just isn't very good and the more latitude he's given reveals that. He's becoming the new George Lucas. The more unbridled that man got, the worse his shit stunk.

This is why when Jackson was replaced with del Toro some years ago, I was actually looking forward to finding out what he would make out of the story.

Yeah in Fellowship of the Ring I understood all of the changes and though that they made the story better, that book did need huge changes.

The other two books did not need so many changes but he made just as many... why? Worst was putting Shelob near the end of RotK instead of as the ending to Two Towers.
