Yeah, story/setting/characters/detail were all great. The graphics for the time were also pretty amazing. The actual combat was better than uncharted, but I agree that it wasn’t anything fantastic. Fighting the infected was always much more engaging than fighting humans, but even that got a bit routine. Fighting other humans was just boring and not all that fun
The first game was pretty much about Joel. Ellie was a motivation for his journey, but he was definitely the main protagonist.
Id have much rather them just follow completely new characters than ruin the story they already had. I mean Joel and Ellie’s story was pretty much complete in the first one anyways, just pick new characters and you can fill in what happened with joellie with information you pick up as the new characters
It was one of those games that actually got easier for the most part as you went through just due to resources and skills. Hardest part of the game imo though was playing as Ellie where you have the tons of infected attack you and the other dude. Starting the generator underneath the hotel and have a bloater pop out scared the shit out of me though.Gameplay highlight of the first game is when you had to sneak through that parking garage basement when you usually had very little resources to getting caught meant you're dead.

So the story was literally about a man helping and teaching a girl? Literal patriarchy, no wonder it had to be shit on!
Seriously though...
What an idiotic choice to make you PLAY as the person who just killed the two protagonists who you've built up an emotional connection with. Redemption arcs take time, and they are difficult. Tossing you over to literally control the thing being used to destroy characters the player actually has substantial empathy for without some amazing and lengthy plot to garner some empathy in turn is so completely tone deaf. The culprit here sounds more like autism than anything else. That takes some profound misunderstanding of how people build attachment to imaginary personas.
I dunno, the media could go for a needless violence against women narrative... oh who am I kidding... stunning and brave trannies are higher on the progressive stack. If what is said in the spoilers happens in the game I wouldn't be surprise to see massive refunds on the game, the media could always blame racist, right wing males for the game tanking.
