Great movie.. it makes Gravity look like an even worse movie than it already is.

Saw it in 3D, was incredible. Visuals were great in 3D, wasnt overdone or distracted from what was on screen.

How can you tell? I saw it in 3D as well but I can't figure out if I missed anything from the experience because it was so subtle.

The blonde chick at mission control kept reminding me of Katy Perry and a quick google search told me that blonde chick can't do short hair. Good lord..

A lot of them were just the foreground shots of the martian landscape and were as you said, done in a subtle way....which I was hoping for and not really flying spaceship debris at your face and such.

Just got back from the theater. It wasn't sold out but it was damn close. Movie kicked ass. Gorgeous film. More humor than I expected as well.

My one complaint is that there isn't enough Mars in the movie. There is only one good shot of Olympus Mons and that lasts for one second. Towards the end you get to see dust devils, and Watney talks about being the first person to walk up and down things... I would have loved more of that exploration and more focus on the beauty/desolation of Mars. But I guess that would have made for a much more boring film (for everyone but me!). I wanted to see a sunrise/sunset, the night sky, the weirdness of it all, because there are so few films about this kind of stuff I pretty much have nowhere else to look for that. I would have loved a flyby of Valles Marineris. What they did do of Mars was fantastic, so it would have just been great visual material of Mars that doesn't exist anywhere else right now. Clearly I am desperate for this material, sick of the cheesy animations you see on random, mostly sensationalized documentaries.

Casting in the film was great.

One question:
I didn't read the book, so how did he not freeze to death at night after the entry pod exploded and all he had sealing the entry was plastic with duct tape?

In the book he butchers the dome for hab canvas, effectively making it smaller, so his patch is the same material which I assume has thermal retention properties.

They used the heavy, clear plastic sheet a few times where in the book he used hab canvas. For the airlock the only reason I can think of for this change is that it makes it more obvious it's a bodge job and gives him something to look at pensively!

Read the book - really enjoyed the movie, they did a pretty good job with cutting certain things.
However, the one thing you lack in the movie which you really get in the book is the distance Watney has to travel and how long it really takes....

in the movie that trip to the MAV to leave Mars is equal to (from what i remember) like the distance from driving from Houston to NY, and he can only travel at so slow a speed that it literally takes him i think it was like 4 or 6 months to do this trip. However in the movie, he is there almost as soon as he sets out.
There are other distance things like this throughout the movie which were just instant in the film. I understand it makes the movie 'faster' but i think they could have done a better job portraying just how long it really took him to get places.
But, awesome movie, gets ya in the feels

If they release an extended version of him doing the distance with more banter, that would be a happy thing IMO.

Mentioned before, the air lock thing. It blew the fuck up, then the hole was covered in plastic. I am sure I am missing something there.

I enjoyed the movie. It's way dumbed down from the books as far as the science explained in detail, but that's to be expected. It's a decent adaptation, otherwise.

It was supposed to be hab canvas I think which is supposed to be really strong. Still you don't get that impression from what he did it looks really flimsy.

yea, in the book he cuts a huge section of hab canvas out and uses super adhesive to glue it to the busted up airlock and re-inflate the whole HAB after. HAB was different in the book too

Imagine having to describe the how the super adhesive works to the audience?

yea, same with a few other parts they cut...
Basically for all of you who really enjoyed this movie and have not read the book..... read the book, it's really good, and it's a pretty fast read too.

I saw it on Saturday and really enjoyed it. There were definitely a few things to nitpick, but overall it was "reasonable" and enjoyable. The scenery and visuals were gorgeous and the comedy moments were great.

I'd really recommend it!

Also reminded me of the Baxter book "Titan" although that one had a somewhat different ending...

Was gonna see this in 3D but after reading here I'll hold off on it. Pretty pumped to go see it tonight.

I liked it, a few parts from the book I wish they had left in or at least mentioned but otherwise pretty good.

Also kept waiting for Sean Bean to die.
