I liked it, a few parts from the book I wish they had left in or at least mentioned but otherwise pretty good.

Also kept waiting for Sean Bean to die.
LOL, there were moments where I felt he was expecting to die as well haha

I kept staring at his face when they started talking about the council of Elrond, to see if he would make a "not this shit" twitch

Just saw it tonight, theater was almost full but it was cheapass tuesday, so it was only $6. I ended up reading the book first and I thought they did a great job adapting it. I understand them making the end a bit more "Hollywood", but one thing about it bugged me more than that.

Lewis should have stayed put and let Beck get Watney, it seemed out of character for her. Beck is the goddamn EVA specialist after all and would be the best chance of retrieving him.

I really hope there will be a directer's cut with extra nerdiness and Watney's smartass commentary. Like Weir said in one of the videos posted earlier, I was looking forward to the Aquaman joke along with a few others.

Holy shit if they pulled off a director's commentary with Damon in character as Watney and back filled some of the extra science / smart ass over his mission logs, it'd be incredibly awesome.

They already have like a half hour's worth of viral videos to cram into the bluray. Tyson said they actually filmed like a 15 mins of his fake Ares-3 Cosmos episode for the viral campaign but the web piece is less than 4 mins long:

They used the Aquaman thing in one of the other viral videos, the 'meet the crew who just spent time in isolation' one.

Saw this last night. Somehow it managed to fly under my radar so I didn't know a thing about it. It was pretty damn good. As a coincidence I'm re-reading Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars at the moment so I found it suitable to see the film. I'm definately going to have to read the book. I like the odd hard sci-fi in amongst my space wizard alien films.

Haven't read the book.

I liked it, but some of the twists couldn't be telegraphed more and don't get me started on the ending. Glover as the genius architect of the final plan was a bit hard to believe and the "math checks out" always came out pretty forced. Still, turning hard scifi into something accessible to the masses is no easy task.

One thing that kept bugging me and might have missed: Why the fuck were they walking outside in the first storm ? You see them getting out of the MAV and then returning back ...

I was looking forward to the joke during the board room scene when they are discussing Project Elrond.
After they explain why it's called Elrond:

  • in the movie she says "man, i really hate you guys"
  • in the book she says something like.. "Man, I bet you guys never got laid"

Just read that the whole thing was almost cut from the movie...

What?s funny is that?s all pure coincidence ?cause the whole Project Elrond thing was in the book. It's not like that was added for the movie cause they had Sean Bean or anything. Ridley was actually like, ?Well, this is stupid. Get rid of that. Call it something else. Pick some other sci-fi or fantasy reference.? And one of the Fox execs was like, ?No. That is funny. You keep that in.?

So, the MAV that was left at the Ares IV site was planned to be there for years (and be critical to getting home) but a random dust storm would have destroyed the one that they needed to get home while they are there on a 30 day mission?

It was a historically bad dust storm, of which they have never seen the likes of.

I just made that up, but that theory makes it sound better.

On a side note, I read that one of the few unscientific things about the book is that the storms on Mars wouldn't have the power to blow over their MAV or ruin their mission.

Dr. Jim Green, the director of the planetary science division of NASA, said that Mr. Weir didn't get everything right - most notably, the dust storm that strands Mark Watney on Mars would, on the surface of the actual planet, not have much force. The air is just too thin. No matter, he said: "I check my science brain at the door when I watch a movie." Besides, he said, " 'The Martian' is reasonably realistic."

Its not like it ruins anything, it's just a bit of a plot hole. [Reason to leave watney on Mars] whatever that reason is, its fine. Just should have come up with something better

Yeah, the storm ended up quicker and didn't match their forecasting and whatnot. It was an aberration for sure, ignoring the plausibility bit.

Really could have probably fixed that if it was a meteor impact or something. Shockwave/debris hazard from a broken up asteroid impacting multiple times relatively close. Would have been real a visual spectacle too.
