It's interesting how many of those older textbooks seem to be so spot on with social analyses and forecasts. They do make forveryinteresting reading. I have three from my grandfathers that I keep on my bookshelf. Well, only one was actually a textbook. But they're all of that vein. One of them damn near predicts the internet, with a late 30's copyright.

Of course, of those, one is called The Coming Dark Age. It proceeds from the same sorts of observation and absolutely completely misses the mark. But it is so completely reasonable at the same time it is so completely wrong.

It had been designed by a Hollywood set designer to mimic the bridge of the starship Enterprise from Star Trek, complete with chrome panels, computer stations, a huge TV monitor on the forward wall, and doors that made a 'whoosh' sound when they slid open and closed. No, it really was designed by some former Disney set design guy to be reminiscent of Star Trek. But when you see it, it doesn't really do it. Like, those rows of tables are covered in papers, snacks, fat guys sitting at them, etc. Those doors that make the "woosh" sound don't so much go "woosh" as they creak along their tracks now. At least one of the screens is always on TNT or something that makes you certain that nothing important is happening right now. It's alright, but when you actually see it it is kind of meh.

Why, I wonder, did they even bring that up? There is no OMGNSASPY stuff going on there. It's just a watch center.
