funding pandemic, finally decided on either of 2 mandolins, and my friend who builds custom guitars said he will set it up, and everywhere is out of stock

They sent out the replacement via FedEx and then tonight the first USPS package starts moving on tracking hah...

Might end up both arriving tomorrow, that would be something.

Yeah that looper is seriously fun, played with it for like four hours last night.

______ /C-E-Looper--Amp 1
Guitar_____Looper
______\-D---Looper--Amp 2

C=Compressor/Sustainer
E=Delay
D=Distortion
Looper=Ditto X4

This is my signal chain now, using a simple Y cable out of my guitar. Using the Ditto's stereo channels to make it work.

Actually hey what do you guys think, in general -- compressor before or after delay? I'm hearing pros and cons to each.

I'm one of those weirdos that oft enjoys putting my distortion after my delay tho so hey

I like it before pretty much everything. Gives you the added sustain and brings out those quieter notes so everything after it has the dynamics it brings out.

Yeah compressor is almost always the first or second thing in the chain.

You guys never question those rules of thumb when you've only got a couple things in the chain tho? I basically just crank the knobs on my delay pedal all the way (I play a lot of ambient guitar, so sue me) putting the compressor after it is creating this awesome effect where it masks the decay a bit and makes it feel like an infinite repeat that gets autocleared when you play your next phrase. But there's some other obvious "cons" to it.

Maybe you guys have long enough chains that you never dink around enough with stuff like this to have input beyond the rule of thumb?

I'm always running multiple ODs and I want those to take control when active and not get limited by a compressor. Plus as jooka mentioned you get added sustain.

Yeah the sustain is a moot point when the only other things in the chain are a delay and a looper haha :) everything lasts plenty long either way

Now that you mention it tho, withth this looper I have been realizing I need another overdrive or some other type of boost I can punch on for certain leads... Playing lead over your own looped part can be a bit muddy for certain riffs if you've got that loop set loud enough

I would just decrease the volume of the looper. Adding more volume to an already muddy sound will just make it more muddy.

This is my current setup I've been using lately. I haven't quite decided if I like the Dark Side before the boogie pre-amp or in the effects loop so I end up swapping it around here and there. I will also swap the volume pedal over to my midi controller as a expression pedal for certain stuff.

I think in the older dark side it has an insert jack so you could put the delay part into the loop and keep the fuzz up front.

Question everything and do your own thing.

The only way to innovate is to try

It's a phreds I bought back when they were first getting started. They didn't have the options they do now so once I got it and liked how it played I put in seymour duncan '59's and all new shielded wiring. It's awesome for $850 or so.

If volume is the only issue it's going to sound muddy at any level naw? Isn't adding something specifically to brighten up the highs what I would need?

Too many points where I need the looper to be the same volume as the main line I'm playing, using it as a pocket second guitar player for interlocking rhythm parts essentially.

If your loop is too loud and then you play on top of that at a louder volume you're adding more breakup which will make it sound more muddy. Could be an EQ adjustment but I would look into lowering your volume/gain across the board first.

NGD x2 (I've been playing more guitar the past two months than I've played in the past 2 years, so thought I'd splurge a little)~

Breedlove finally got finished at luthier (had him make a few minor adjustments, the daddario strings it comes with are pretty meh, adjusted the action slightly etc). The guitar absolutely booms. Amazing the richness of sound and clarity coming out of the myrtlewood. Also pretty happy as I managed to get one of the last "suede burst" colored guitars Breedlove makes (only made like 25 of them). Great acoustic and a massive step up from my old Ibanez/Taylor 1 series I was strumming before.

Also, I bought my first electric (technically I bought two but am returning one). My LGS guy is a guild dealer and let me "borrow" one of his new Guild Starfire V's to take home and test drive the past two weeks. Great guitar and really fun to play, and retails like $1100 so not terribly expensive. It's MiKorea, but the finish and fit are excellent for an East Asian guitar (dealer also deals Gretsch guitars, and this is a step up in finish and presentation from the MiChina Gretschs and a bit below the MiJapan Gretschs I looked at). Paintwork is excellent as well and it's a really neat instrument. Cool sound too. Problem was, it just felt kind of awkward playing due to the size/shape. Went back in today to grab my acoustic and returned the Starfire and walked out with a Les Paul Studio - the body shape felt excellent both in holding and in play (sitting and standing) and was able to get some very nice sounds out of the thing - build quality and materials are really well done as well. It was slightly more than the Guild, but he cut me a few hundred off to meet in the middle. Only gripe (so far) is they cheaped out and it only comes in a (albeit very nice) gig bag/soft bag. The Guild, at $500 cheaper came with a superb hard case.

That said, for a Southern Rock, bluesy sort of sound anyone have any recommended pedals, etc? I'm going to run through my old orange amp but open to reasonable amp suggestions as well.

Something like 1 or 2 tube screamers, wah of choice, and something like a fender deluxe or a vibroverb reissue would be a good start. That's pretty much SRV's setup. Keep in mind he cranked the amp as hard as he could.
