For you blues guys, check this clip out. Not the most flashy/perfect playing or anything, but this is my buddy Drew who's a damn solid blues player. He was checking out my RG swirl, and we both noticed that the pickups (which I just use for shred, because I'm a boring guitarist stuck in 1989) sounded pretty damn bluesy.

That's a basswood body with Breeds in it. Pretty vintage sounding for an RG, eh?

It's not a bad looking setup, but let me voice my concerns with the brand. I think for the money you can do better.

For the mic preamp, I use:
http://www.amazon.com/Alesis-Mic-Tub...pd_sim_sbs_e_3

And for a mic, the industry standard really is a:
http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SM57-LCE...ds=shure+sm-57

For headphones I couldn't really recommend anything personally. But you should be able to find someone who has used something for that (Seventh?). It might be slightly more expensive, but I think you'd be much better off using a mic like the SM-57 considering literally everyone uses one for instrument recording (especially at a home recording level).
The Scarlett is a great little interface, lots of dudes on my forum use it with pretty solid results. It's awesome how far recording gear has come in the last few years - back when I was starting out (uphill both ways, through the snow, etc) a $250 recording setup was garbage and a one-way ticket to latency hell.

I use the 57 for everything. I borrowed a 421 from a buddy of mine and did some A/B with it, and alone I like the 57 better. Blending the two was too much of a pain in the ass to get out of phasing hell, so I just stick with the 57 because it works and is dead simple to get a good sound out of. I don't have any clips handy with it, but I did do a couple of videos. One is that PRS baritone one I've linked already, and the other is when I first got my Mark V.

In hindsight I had too much treble dialed out of that one, but other than that I think that clip sounds pretty good. That's just shoving the 57 slightly off axis (there's a pic in the video) and hitting record, with a mild low/high so that the rhythm didn't shit all over the drums. For a hundred bucks you really can't beat it.

Would it be sensible to just start with that package, and then add more mics and such later? I'd rather start small, and while I'm figuring it out my noobishness will be a bigger factor than mic quality and quantity anyway I think.

That Scarlett package comes with a condenser, which will be passable for micing up your amp. It's not the best option, but used SM57s are a dime a dozen on eBay and you'll have plenty to digest when you're just starting out anyway. I'd say go for it - you might like Cubase too. (I don't, but DAW preference is all about workflow anyway.)

Acoustics LOVE condensers. Get yourself a decent mic stand and slap that in front of the sound hole and it's basically instant Days of the New tone (which IMO is some of the beat acoustic tone ever), especially if you layer it.

Recording is a shitload of fun, and there is a crapload to learn. Start small, see if you dig it, and if you do it's certainly easy enough to add on later.

I could easily get a SM57 at the same time. Would that be a better idea? The rest of the package looks pretty solid.

I think so, yeah. The Scarlett has two mic pres in it, so if you're recording the acoustic you can use the condenser on the sound hole, and the 57 on the neck, then blend 'em together into a Wall Of Win and watch the panties drop all around you.

Alright, groovy. That blues clip sounded good, too. Funny to see how guitars often defy what you'd think they would sound like based on what they look like.

So I did the deed and tore the N3s with S1 switch pickguard out of my AmDeluxe strat and put in CS Texas Specials, a master tone with no-tone detent and a neck/bridge blender pot.

Holy. Shit.

It's like I was playing midi music with the N3s compared to these monsters. Battle tested too, I went out to a blues jam tonight and played for about 1.5 hours. I got a ton of compliments on my tone, just the guitar plugged straight into a Fender Princeton '65 solid state amp.

I'm going to try another place next week that loves high volume, I'll bring my TS-9 and tear the god damn walls out with this thing.

Everyone was a noob, and asked those same questions at one time or another dude.
Yeah, that's all fine and dandy, but on the same note, a lot of this "discussion" doesn't happen because it doesn't need to happen. There's nothing to discuss because text about your instrument (and I'm not speaking directly to you, just the discussion at hand) and where you jammed at last night doesn't lend itself to discussion most of the time. What should we say to Duppin? Grats bro? I mean, lets be realistic here. If you want to post some vids of your playing, we can talk about that. If you want to just use this as some kind of a facebook wall for the adventures of your Stratocaster, there's not going to be much debate going on.

Just to piss off Cutlery, I ended up getting this:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AudioBoxStu

GC had the Scarlett package too but they said that the included software with the Scarlett bundle was a little more limited in what it could do. Otherwise it has the same shit (one mic, headphones, interface with 2 mic preamps).

Going to dig into it some later tonight to see how it does. I didn't end up getting a SM57 yet, but I likely will quickly if I seem to be able to get a handle on the software etc.

As far as me asking/talking about noob shit: Sorry, gentlemen, it's all I *can* talk about right now. As I get better, my questions will (and already have) evolve. I'd love to hear more stuff from the more advanced guys in this thread myself. But if you don't like me sharing new things I'm finding and that I'm enthusiastic about, I apologize and would ask that you just skip over those posts.

OK, but why simultaneously ask simple questions and get one or two good answers and say 'shits going down the toilet'? Unless you meant the boards in general... :p

I meant the boards in general, sorry. The people in this thread have been great. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
