Also, this is pretty slick to jam over. Eb/Db, great if you have a few fiddles and keep one down a halfstep.

(No idea on cleaning the sweat off, but water should be fine as long as you don't leave it on there. I like my guitars beat up, so I'd just leave it

No kidding. You just earned your first battle scar. You should be proud.

Fuck, the blues bundle I bought from that site Seventh linked isn't downloading properly. Hopefully they can send me a proper version of it tomorrow.

The best way to develop your ear is to try and guess what key it is in. If it comes out sounding terrible, you're probably in the wrong key

Usually I'll just jam pentatonics over something until I find out what key I'm really in.

It's the intertubes telling you that they want you to shred. (I'm sure he'll take care of you, David is top shelf.)

Yup. This is that $2500 Suhr I bought over the winter. Not intentional, I just play the shit out of it, and everyone that comes over to jam plays the shit out of it as well. The maple board is starting to wear in a bit too, I think it all just makes it look cooler. The pick marks are hilarious - can you tell that I play a lot of thrash?

Yeah, it's dealt with.

As far as battle scars go, that fits with this guitar, but still, grrr. I was trying to be careful!

Also, NO SHREDDING. I still can't alternate pick very well (it's one of the big things I'm working on right now) which is sortof a prerequisite. :p

More new gear! Picked up a Jekyll & Hyde OD/Distortion today.

I spent a couple hours playing with various OD pedals and it was the best sounding one to my ears. The OD side gives a perfect crunch for blues, and the distortion will be good for solos (it can get VERY aggro, but also dials back nicely).

It's the red V1 version.

Not directly guitar-related, but I sang for the first time on Tuesday, at the blues jam I go to. I wasn't able to play and sing at the same time, but I sang "Crosscut Saw" and all of my friends there said I did just fine aside from having to have the lyrics on a sheet of paper as a hedge against getting nervous and forgetting them.

See, you're already better than I am. I don't even go to jams. I should do it again though, I'm feeling frisky for this weekend. As far as singing and playing, I can do it to some degree but I can't even sing alone with the lyrics. Too involved in the act of singing to be reading that shit at time of delivery.

Jamming is fun as hell, and it's the ultimate low-pressure environment. I've grown a lot faster than I would otherwise because I have an incentive to get better, but if I fuck up a lot along the way, it doesn't matter.

I was going to a weekly jam session with some solid musicians a month or so ago, but the bar stopped hosting it for some reason. No idea why. The place was dead on a Wednesday night and at least enough musicians would show up to buy drinks. Within the last couple weeks, the place even started getting pretty crowded. Definitely a low pressure situation. I especially loved it because my role was always lead guitar player. All I did was play licks in between verses and take on solos. Guitar player's dream position.

Bar owners/managers seem to be basically insane about music stuff. It's why no matter how good I get, I have basically zero desire to be a gigging musician. If I ever do, it'll be solely as a fun sideline and the goal will be to break even.

Being a gigging musician is what it's all about. I miss playing in my original band. People were actually starting to learn the words to our songs by our last few gigs. It was badass. Transporting equipment is a pain in the ass and there are a lot of questions you need to ask the venue prior to agreeing to play, but that comes with experience. It's the best thing in the world.

Fuck the road, that's never been the ultimate goal for any of my aspirations.

My goal is way more along the lines of what Seventh has done -- get enough good material together to be able to put something on a disc or up on ITunes or Youtube and make a couple of bucks and have my name attached to something cool for all eternity.

Thankfully for me, I got back in touch with one of the guys I played with in high school, and lo and behold, it turns out we still love playing together.

Okay, just finished a transaction.

After a long night of web research I was able to work out what amp to buy. I actually spent hours too, looking back. Following some of the advice given here and looking at all the options.

I narrowed it down to the Blackstar amps. Then worked out that the 1 Watt combo would be the best option for me in my situation. HT-1R Combo to use its correct name. Quite a lot cheaper than the 5 Watt for a very similar package, just not the same power.

Checked various youtube vids and it seems to have a great sound.

Then found that on a guitar store website for sale, so just sealed the deal.

Blackstar amps seem to be pretty well regarded, and if you want something you can get some distortion out of in a small space, you should be in good shape.

What do you guys think of this bundle for a basic home recording setup to start off with?

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ScarlettStu/
It's not a bad looking setup, but let me voice my concerns with the brand. I think for the money you can do better.

For the mic preamp, I use:
http://www.amazon.com/Alesis-Mic-Tub...pd_sim_sbs_e_3

And for a mic, the industry standard really is a:
http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SM57-LCE...ds=shure+sm-57

For headphones I couldn't really recommend anything personally. But you should be able to find someone who has used something for that (Seventh?). It might be slightly more expensive, but I think you'd be much better off using a mic like the SM-57 considering literally everyone uses one for instrument recording (especially at a home recording level).
