it looks like the reflection of rippling water. Seems like there'd be a relatively easy way to use that to make the illusion.

For sure, it could be. I have zero proof or personal experience. IMO it's pretty dumb in general for anyone to give a "it's 100% (not) this!" 🤷‍♂️

I mean, you're zooming WAY in with probably a shitty camera. And you can tell the sun is rising or setting. Could be light reflecting off a high altitude jet liner and you get that effect?
I sit in a flight path for a major IA. Suppose I could see what my old A14 can do when the snowstorm ends tomorrow or Thursday vs my coolpix. Yes, I'm this bored.

She wasn't using a small aperture addition, so maybe there was just too much light to focus clearly on the plasma jesus ball.
