Surprisingly enjoying the new DT album. It's in my regular rotation right now. Fucking fired up to see them front and center in a couple weeks.

I dig Wolf People. They put on a great show. But they're way more psychedelic than prog. At least in the context of this thread.

I declare myself one of the biggest prog fans and i know a helluva lot of bands, i spendt my teens scouring the net, books, for anything prog related, and still do to this day and have discovered prog bands from every corbner of the world, africa had them, asia had them. Prog was BIG in its time. , but man
Rush aint prog, I'm going to get shit for this, but i'm sorry. It's like the creed of the prog world. Never thought of them as prog, more like proto prog ala hawkwind, in other words, THEY SUCK, i also have to confess that i was coming from years of listening to Gentle Giant, Return to forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Brand X. Rush felt like a corny Monkeeys like project, the music makes me cringe. While my "prog friends were drooling over that rush crap, i was rocking deloused in the comatorium when it came out.

Fuck you right back mate, but nop. At best it's AOR. Shitty shitty prog, ask yourself. Why do people know rush, because they are a pop band.

And dont get me dstarted on Geddy's chalk on board voice. I'll give you this. Peart is a good drummjer, but he was no where near the skill of Phil Collins and Bill Bruford to mention a few in their prime in the 70's. He could only dream to play like Billy Cobham, he is god in comparison.

I place Rush in the same crappy music vein as Journey.

Are you one of those all math, no melody dudes? Your problem with them also seems to stem from the fact that people like them. A prog hipster. Who would have known?

I've never thought Peart was the best ever. He's nowhere close to the likes of Mangini or Minnemann.

Not at all, my favorite records are the first Genesis ones up until acabvab or whatever, i love HArmonium, look at the link over. I love Gong, huge fan og the Canterbury scene, Stevei wonder is God, and Gentle Giant is all melody, so i love melody. I listen to alot of Litszt, the Gould variations, acid jazz. I'd say i love melody

My favorite band is Genesis up until then there were threee, those are full of melody, ELO, full of melody, Gentle Giant. KErry mennier (the keyboard player( was classically trained and ade beautiful melodies. Harmonium, the one i posted above. All melody. Gong, all melody, mitchy mitchell, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Elliot Smith. Melody is the beauty of music

Mahavishnu Orchestra is sick. John McLaughlin is the man.

Mangini is metal but Minnemann kind of covers all the bases. I wouldn't consider Steven Wilson to be metal and Minnemann plays on two of his albums. And then his work with The Aristocrats is all over the place.

but did you pay attention to the cobham drumming. That beat is hard to play. And it's original, love it

And yesm i'll admit it. I'm unashamelly a prog hipster. I'v been listening to it since i was 12, when my step father showed me this funny looking record of a Italian band called Premiatta Forneria Marconi, this was the month Nevermind debuted. I though Cobain sounded like he was taking a massive dump while singing. I was used to Jon andersons sweet voice. SO yeagh, hated grunge until much later. So call me a snob. I spendt hours on prg archives looking up bands from countries you never thought good music would come from. Itali is one of those. And the nedelands. and all of europe really, hundreds of prog bands that are obscure and you can even hear prog elements on pop music as it influenced the mainstream for a while- One example is AKte bush, Forest, Chicago, None of them culd escape the alure of prog. even so subtle.

After having Close to the edge, Tarkus, Gentle Giant on repeat for months, nevermind was pretty fucking underwhelming.

PS, i dont hate people liking what i like. I hate people coming with opininions that dont match (not refering to you) Like the Rush thing, at some point t was cool to listen to prog. Rush was the most poppy and accecible, hence people think they are "prog heads" because the know rush.

I like that he uses a Taurus Moog pedal, that is the extent of my rush liking.

My favorite prog is and will always be John Wetton era King Crimson, but Rush will always hold a special spot in my heart. Their 70s and early 80s output helped shape modern prog, idk how you can say they're not prog.
