You don't need heavy cream. You can use a can of fruit and sugar if you want. Add milk or don't. All this thing does is shave ice really so you just need something frozen. A normal ice cream machine is like twice as much but i'd honestly prefer a real one.

I went through the same thing but with waffles recently. I like to make a couple in the morning but got tired of paying like $10 a pack of 8 Kodiak power waffles that tasted bland. At Costco we found this for about the same price so now I make 3 waffles in about the same amount of time it took me to warm three frozen ones but it is way cheaper and they taste 1,000% better.

You can make neat things in a waffle iron using mashed potatoes.
