I don't get the point of these really, do you just sit around and talk to random strangers all day? I'm not trying to be an asshole, I'm honestly curious.Icom - 718, new ham radio for myself.
Ive always wondered that too. Any time I have to turn on my CB in my pickup so that I dont get run the fuck over by a logging truck, there is always some asshole screaming AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDIO OOOOO HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLO and I just turn it back off and risk it. I would imagine ham radio is full of those wonderful folks.I don't get the point of these really, do you just sit around and talk to random strangers all day? It's the fun of tinkering. I build a lot of the stuff, antennas and other stuff like tuners just to see if I can do it. Plus you can get some pretty intersting info in the world by either listening or talking to people in certain areas. I have hit 180+ countries and the international space station 2 way and on several occasions with groups like expeditions that have no internet etc..as well as groups of people that their only contact is really radio. You can also do data on amatuer radio as well if that is your thing, not mine but it's another tech area people fiddle with.I don't get the point of these really, do you just sit around and talk to random strangers all day? The wifes car is a 2005 Civic that still has the plastic that dealers remove on the carpets on it as its live its entire life with mats and rubber mats over it, it just broke 20k miles- I just got it tinted that looks absolutely fantastic and has a nice dvd nav installed looks good... I don't know what to do with the thing when we go to get her a bigger car for kid-hauling once the 2nd kid starts going to school... no dealer will give me what its worth- if I got it detailed (soon!) the thing will look brand new... it may be worth it just to keep it. I almost traded it to get her a new rouge, when I was talking to the dealer about trade in value he was like "okay a 05 civic with 200k, I was like no... 20..." lolI bought a 2006 Honda CRV 4 years? ago. I saw it being driven around from the back of detail shop to the display parking area in front. I pointed at it and said "Sold." Used Hondas are usually beat to shit, but this one was clearly loved and coddled by its previous owner. Every square inch, as showroom new. Gems like this don't last long, so I bought it on the spot.
60k miles, but perfect. I got exactly fair market value...for this, it was a steal.
Fast forward to today. 3k more miles on the odometer than when I bought it. GF occasionally used it to shuttle her kids around, but other than that, there it sat.
Time flies. My GF's oldest kid was 12 when i bought it. We've all been particularly smitten with it, for various reasons. Easy to dive, fast engine for what it is, super easy in traffic. My GF's oldest kid loved it from the second she saw it. hell, I haven't had to clean it ONCE in four years, the kid took care of that.
So anyway, GF's oldest kid and I don't really get along. We don't fight or brew up pointless melodrama, but we don't seek out each other's company. There's some love there, though...I guess. I was bedridden for almost a week last winter, and she was right there with a cool, wet towel, patting the sweat from my face and hands. I didn;t ever dream of that happening.
Anyway, she stays here a few nights a week during school because the school she goes to is 3 blocks away, and she likes a morning jog. I don't have any rules other than be clean, and I think that appeals to her. Otherwise, she completely ignores me. He mother appreciates the quiet of her absence, too.
So anyway. (yeah, blah blah...I've been completely shagged for 5 days..super power for keeping it hidden) Kid is now 16 and needs a car. There's zero public transport here, so she really does need a car. I've been poking around on CL looking at used shit, and it's all garbage. High miles stuff for big prices. Junk, junk, junk, as far as the eye can see. Anyway, lots of dead ends, and the GF is getting depressed looking at all the crap cars out there. Yeah, kiddo and I don't say much to each other, but she holds my hands when we go to Wal Mart (but no where else). Tell you the truth, it makes me feel pretty good. Lovelies are lovely.
Called my GF earlier, and asked for kiddo...surprised her because I've never done that. I could hear kiddo in the background, asking what she did wrong.
She arrived, and I pointed her at two 40-lb salt bags that needed to be dumped into the softener thing. Strong, fast kid; didn't even huff once. She patted the salt off her hands, and smiled a bit.
I pointed at the Honda, and said, "Don't wreck her, because it'll really break your heart if you do."
Kiddo gave me a "wha..???" look. I pressed the keys into her palm, and said, "She's all yours."
Stunned silence. Stunned, numb silence. Minutes...nay, eons...passed.
Then, 'AYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" much dancing around as if I'd dropped firecrackers into her pants. And...about 3000 years worth of affection in 30 seconds. Kinda worth it, imo.
"Gas card is behind the radio...good though college." Her eyes filled with giant tears.
"Now, go show your momma." I said, and off she went after some 9 million more hugs.
Cute car, cute kid. That's what I bought it for, I guess. Neither her nor her momma expected so much as a penny's help buying a car...almost can't wait to hear her reaction.
A bit of tarnish got removed from my halo today.
Kind of thought the same thing. Why does she even need a car if she only drives 2000 miles per year?
It's almost like the internet, just without the pics!I don't get the point of these really, do you just sit around and talk to random strangers all day? I'm not trying to be an asshole, I'm honestly curious.
Wow. How do his neighbors feel about that?these are hisantennas
Is this real life ?My dad is hooked on HAM radio stuff, these are hisantennasand I'll look up a pic of his hardware (mostly Yaesu from what I remember) as well.
Esthetics or radio interference ? No one cares about the first and he's been doing this for so long I don't think any of them remember how it is to have working over-the-air radio/tv.Wow. How do his neighbors feel about that?
If you ever get anyone else interested screw the books.I have a ham license that I got in college so we could use those frequencies to transmit data for our senior project. I have never used it since although a few years ago I tried to get a bunch of people in my neighborhood to get licenses so we could get in touch with each other while not in the house. Like 6 people came and bought books to study for the first license but as far as I can tell nobody ever actually looked at the books, let alone studied enough to take the test so that was kind of a flop.
Wow. How do his neighbors feel about that?
This weekend is field day across the US. Ham clubs get outdoors and practice their emergency prepartdness and try and contact all 50 states etc...Some places really get into it. Me, not so much but if you are intested in ham radio look up a local club and you can go out and make contacts this weekend etc...A lot of them use it as PR thing as well. It's almost like the internet, just without the pics!
On a serious note, you need a license to operate those things, so the mindless mouthbreather drivel usually stays out. At least that's how it was back when I still dabbled in these things.
I took part in a few local (european) contests where you (and your team) sit on your ass for 24 hours and try to collect miles. We had a small mobile home parked on the highest hill we could find within 100 km, took shifts sleeping in our cars, and just had a good time.
Never had the money for a shortwave rig though, and got bored eventually.
From until last year with her new job I drove everywhere + kid hauling- her civic was at 16k, now she drives to her new job + 1 kid, I drive to my job and the other kid- next august she will be doing both kids so she wants a bigger (small SUV) car, her driving miles have gone up a lot... considering her previous count that is and for a little more metal and safety for her and the kids than the civic. We have a van and her civic- I would like to trade down the van to a midsize SUV and her civic up to a small SUV. The Van was extremely awesome with lots of baby and toddler stuff, but as they move to preschoolers we don't need giant car seats, giant diaper bags, giant double strollers etc... just some booster seats and backpacks.Kind of thought the same thing.
