No, I don't think life in prison is a joke.
Yes, I think racism is the problem here.
Yes, troubled aggressive youth is a problem too. While I'm sure many of you (if not you specifically) love telling yourselves this is an inherently black trait, that's just simple fucking bullshit.
Put people in a situation where they are expected to underperform and they underperform.
Assume the worst in people (not just on an individual level but on a societal level) and they give you the worst.
I'm not justifying Martin's violent actions, nor the actions of any black youth who have committed crimes. I'm saying that racism absolutely perpetuates and contributes to this type of behavior.

I hear people on this board bitching all the time and throwing words like "white guilt" or "male guilt" around every time it's suggested that being a racist or misogynist prick has a negative effect on society. I guess that's human nature. Racists and misogynists don't like being told they're part of the problem, so they lash out and defend... what, exactly? People's right to hate?

If Zimmerman had to spend a couple of months living with a black family, maybe he'd realize their end goal is not to make the world a shittier place for whites. Maybe he'd realize that racism is a part of their everyday lives and that that has an effect on people. Maybe he'd realize that this family is very similar to most families, dealing with the same issues and the same ups and downs. Maybe he wouldn't look at the next unfamiliar black face as being "suspicious" after getting a little bit of context. Awww, who am I kidding? All you heard was "white guilt white guilt white guilt". It doesn't matter if what I say makes perfect sense, many of you will reject it outright because you somehow feel that racism is something worth defending, thatI'msomehow the bad guy (or worse,intolerant) for suggesting that maybe we could all be a little nicer to each other.
