I bought a Whirley POP from Bed&Bath for like $20. Put in some oil and popcorn, put on stovetop, turn crank, you have fresh popcorn in a few minutes that beats the shit out of microwave popcorn.
i bought one of those ten years ago. it works great though i dunno how effective the crank thing is. i found this at the thrift store a few months ago.

this one has no cranking mechanism, starts popping at around 7 minutes and and i end up with very few unpopped kernels. its a wonderful machine. i use virgin olive oil and the store brand popping corn. then throw in flavacol and pop secret theater popcorn oil for taste. its amazing.

The crank is mostly to prevent burning on the stove top due to uneven pops. Kernels won’t pop until the oil reaches a certain temperature, but kernels also pop at different rates. I suspect that device you got gets around that by trying to keep the popped stuff away from the heat source so you don’t get burned popcorn.

You’ve convinced me I’m going to buy that too. Plus supposedly dry kernels of popcorn have an indefinite shelf life, good for prepping.

my theory is the whirlypop is an aluminum pot so it doesnt distribute heat very evenly and the vintage popper in that picture might be using a steel surface which is better at even even heat so there is less chance for hot spots and burned kernels. i dont get burning on mine. btw that lid doubles as the container you eat out of. just turn it over when done.

i had an air popper as a teen. you get less flavor and be aware it blows popcorn everywhere. it also sounds just like a hairdryer.

Oil popped tastes so much better than air. Good extra virgin olive oil adds a nice flavor to it. Although butter would help air popped regardless. Toss some nice melted Irish butter on it, not some cheap land o lakes shit.

AMC sent out emails announcing they are reopening, they also let you cancel your A-List sub on the website now. I cancelled mine, I honestly can't see myself going to theaters the way i used to - 4-6x a month, solo, in the afternoons - for a long time
I know some people who worked at their HQ here in town. Employees got treated pretty badly. One buddy was saying that in a 2 or 3 month period sitting at home during COVID, he only heard from management twice, I think.

IIRC they'd get 2 free movie passes/cards per person, and each card would get the cardholder and one guest into a movie for free. So basically one employee could take themselves and 3 guests using two cards, for as many free movies as you could endure.

Now that they basically boned so many employees, I don't know if we'll ever go back. And it's not because we don't have what was basically an endless source of free movies anymore...I'm just not sure if anyone will feel like going to AMC after everything that went down.

One thing that irritated me, was that people I knew were getting their AMC updates from the media, because AMC sure as shit wasn't keeping them in the loop.

As far as I'm concerned, AMC can close forever. Let the independent theaters take over again.

I always make mass quantities of popcorn for movie night (fewer now that we have social distancing) and people comment that it tastes exactly like / better than movie popcorn.

I'm like 'no shit...I didn't spend my entire time during undergrad working at a GCC for nothing'

Anywho it's not a question of if Flavacol causes cancer but rather how many different cancers one can get from the stuff. Nevertheless it is absolutely required for popcorn to taste like what we think popcorn should taste like.

So I looked up flavacol on amazon. It's a powder? Do you just sprinkle it on cooked popcorn?

You apply it fairly generously to the popcorn and oil before popping. There is a ratio listed on the carton but I always eyeball it. Sometimes people will sprinkle more on afterwards if they have the physiology of a salt vampire, but typically the stuff you put on before is plenty.

Ya when you get movie popcorn and it has that yellow coloration to it, that is the flavacol they added during the popping process.

i think its a tablespoon. but yeah i just sprinkle it on the kernels in the oil and then after popping i add a little more on top and shake the container some to spread it around. that one carton will probably last you a decade.

We had gotten into the habbit of only seeing Marvel movies and the occasional other film that might have been super fantastic to see on the big screen. At this point, my 75" and my couch are now my only options. I can have a nice ribeye dinner, a cocktail and watch the movie all from my couch. Oh, and I can pause the shit when I need to take a piss. Fuck em.
