Who goes to see video game movies in the theater? The best they'll ever be is a solid B movie. I'm a pretty big fan of the assassin's creed franchise and I haven't even gotten around to seeing the movie.

$90m budget I believe, it should make back its money after foreign and streaming and VOD and shit but not a huge mega franchise or anything
Just got back, 5/10. Watched the OG 2001 Angelina Jolie one last night so I could have a comparison, I'd rate that one a 4/10 mostly for Jolie's spectacular titties. Vikander does a good Lara Croft (2013+ game version) and a few of the action scenes are good in a "yup, thats a video game!" way, like it feels completely right out of the 2013 game many times. However, her dad is in the movie WAY too much and even though I love McNulty from the Wire his character makes Lara Croft a 1 dimensional character. I also love Walter Goggins in everything he has done to date but he is really, really boring and toned down in this movie, which was a horrible idea by the director (I assume). Goggins chews scenery like Al Swearengen and he isn't allowed to here and it really sucks.
The story is NOT a straight cut of the two new games, it is different enough that you aren't just watching a cut scene marathon or something. However, the story is also not good.... at all. Its more grounded and "real" but has absolutely no fun or heart, just action consequence over 90 mins . The first 40 minutes are also incredibly bad, setting up Lara as a character very different from her video game character and that should have been cut to 10 mins or less so more time could have been given to her Island time. Actual Tomb raiding in this game is good but its like... 6 mins of screen time, which is a HUGE bummer.
Zero nudity or anything even close, no love story (good), just straight up action but I'm not really sure who this movie is for, video game nerds want tits and over the top action and a better story, women just don't pay for women-driven action movies in theaters. If you're gonna do video game movies make it R rated and make it crazy insane, don't try to be Indiana Jones.
The story kinda pissed me off, spoilers about the end and stuff
I loved the 2013/2016 games because they preserved the supernatural elements in the world, like there is definitely weird ass shit in this world but only at the fringes and Lara slowly becomes a believer in the first game. There was some SCARY ass shit in the first game with the undead guardians and the deserted villages and of course the insane demon Queen was badass.
In this movie its a fucking virus that just makes people rage-monsters (not even zombies) ... and thats it. Boring as FUCK.
Also her dad was in this movie a ridiculous amount of time on screen, it shoulda been called Tomb Raider: Daddy Issues. There could have been a good movie in here if most of the dad shit was cut out, the first 40 mins was cut out, Walter Goggins played a more insane version of Indiana Jones (regular Goggins), and there was a lot more creepy ass supernatural shit. Everything cool was stripped out to give a really mediocre action movie.
Currently 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. That's not great, but way above average for a video game movie. The Angelina Jolie movies are at 20% and 25% respectively.
It's not horrible, but it's nothing special really. Somewhat by-the-numbers plot (apparently mostly a recombination of elements seen in the recent two games with a good serving of daddy issues on top) that keep things moving, not so hot dialogues, the action and puzzle solving set pieces are not exactly awe or thrill inspiring and the direction is serviceable at best. Also, it's in 3D for no discernible reason... With all this, it still could have been a kind of fetishistic movie about the athletic body of Vikander as Lara Croft, but nope, it's just a very reasonable action-adventure movie that everyone will forget in two days.
For the people looking for something a little more over the top in that genre, I recommend chinese blockbuster Mojin: The Lost Legend (though you have to stomach 10ish terribad minutes that take place in New York!).
Watching this now and it is an absolute travesty on what they did to a beautiful story from the game. Little Ren in the beginning mans his own ship. Lara has no friends she's going with. Her father is alive. Little Ren tells Lara to run. Himiko is good instead of evil. No supernatural. It's a disease.
They should've stuck to the original reboot story. The movie makes zero sense. It sucks.
