Hardest part is remembering to login to all your unused torrent sites so they don't ban your account for inactivity.
If you use chrome or whatever, make a bookmark folder "trackers". Every month - right-click trackers folder, open all bookmarks in new window.

You don't need to seed to get ratio on what.cd. The easiest way to get upload credit is to fill requests. I just had a look and found a request with a 40gb bounty. It was on sale at Amazon.co.uk for ?1.25. So, I ordered the CD and it'll be here in a few days. That's an easy 40gb of upload credit for little to no effort.

Edit - And I just found another one. 18gb bounty for a ?2.35 cd.
You can also check your local library's online search to see if they have any posted requests. People seem to forget that libraries have music these days and often they often have obscure stuff that they have held onto for however long.

Uhh... stupid question, maybe, but why are you guys even using sites like theese, that have ratio and credits and stuff ? The piratebay is great for games and movies, and eztv.it is fabulous for tv shows.

Of course, when it comes to good porn you have to use ratio sites, but theese are porn emporium and cheggit, not the ones I've seen named here.

IPT has blazing speeds since they track seeding. I can regularly get 7000kbps download speeds on a popular file with hundreds of people seeding it. Can grab a 10 gig 1080p movie file in like 20-25 minutes, and a regular 1 gig dvd-quality movie rip in like 2-3 minutes. I've never gotten speeds anywhere close to that on a completely public site(TPB included).

They also seem to often get new releases a little bit quicker than public sites. Might only be a few hours ealier, or a day at most, but they often do get things a little quicker.

All that being said, you're still better off using multiple sites, as sites often go down for extended periods, disappear, or get stuff at different times. If you're looking for something specific it's always nice to have several places to check for it.

I use IPT as a main site now and RevoTT as a backup. Between the two of them, I've never failed to find what I wanted.

@wamphyr, remember that the MAFIAA is quite active in spying on public trackers. Private trackers are a bit less risky.

While it is entirely possible that both of those sites have been re-started and revitalized without me knowing, at one point they both shut down. The spiritual successor is the one I listed, webop.

Same reason I don't eat at homeless shelters. I like my torrents safe, virus free, fast, and all I can eat.

FLAC and Vinyl rips are near impossible to find outside of private trackers. And if you do find them, you have no way of knowing if some idiot didn't just transcode an mp3 into a FLAC file. Private trackers have quality control. Plus where do you think public trackers get their files, for the most part? It is people who downloaded it from a private tracker re-uploading it. Private trackers get things first. Because people care about their ratio nearly everything is always seeded, even if it is old or obscure. And last, but not least, you don't get tagged for piracy and risk paying ridiculous fines. Though anyone who pirates and doesn't run Peerblock or similar needs to reevaluate.

stupid question - if you have access to a public wifi that seems to allow torrenting, how protected are you? can it still be traced to your pc/info?

Unless I'm mistaken, they would have your NICs mac address on file but really no way to trace it to your location, unless it's part of an elaborate sting operation or something I guess...

Depends on how badly someone wants to finger you for a download. Litigants try to tie IP addresses to a single client all the time, but if you're on a public hotspot, you're leaving more than your IP. You're leaving your workstation name and MAC lying around. So, yes, it can conceivably be traced to you if you're caught up in an RIAA/MPAA style lawsuit.

If you're gonna torrent on a hotspot, I'd use a VPN. It'll slow you down, but slower is better than caught.

Have two iptorrents invites, lookin for what.cd or other good music torrent site trade.

DIDYOUKNOW? - [on.iptorrents.ru] is an alternative to the .com side, supposed to be more secure. Woo Russia!

I'm in the US visiting family for a couple weeks. I haven't lived here for years, so I'm out of the loop when it comes to torrenting safety. Do I need to worry much about the fam's ISP sending letters due to my downloading escapades? Are there trackers that are safer than others?
