I'm not saying all vtubers are filthy whores trying to milk lewd content for money, but lots of them use it in the range of: not so sparingly to vast majority of the time. All non vtuber female streamers aren't filthy whores, either. I was watching a bunch of youtube videos of a lot of the vtubers a while ago (jp more so than en tho) and even the hololive girls throw in quite a lot of it. Ended up stopping caring after a while because the lewd nonsense overshadowed the silly humorous stuff that I actually enjoyed and that they played pretty well.

Maybe if you actually watch their streams it's not as prevelant as the youtube videos make it seem but I don't speak Japanese so translated youtube videos are what I had to work with.

Vtubing is/was a good way to get into streaming and stay anonymous. ALL streamers with any decent audience, from titty streamers to dudes like Shroud are going to have stalkers and weirdos trying to track them down. Same shit happens with celebrities in general.

Like I remember hearing some story from Jesse Cox where you could see some branch outside his window and some dude in chat tracked down where he exactly lived from that. Or that infamous case in Japan where some guy figured out where a girl lived from a reflection in their eye.

Think about it: you do your vtube shit and if you decide to stop, it’s easier to fade out into obscurity. The only thing they could use is maybe your voice, assuming you didn’t alter that as well

Plus as others pointed out, vtubers will get judged on their avatar and personality, not what they look like IRL. Basically your MMO character is now a streamer for people who don’t get it

I'm quite sure if you saw some streamer with a "normal" looking animated adult male avatar you'd still assume the worst.

Look at Vtubers on twitch then scroll to the least watched ones and you'll find non traditional avatars. The reason they are mostly anime based is because this all started in Japan. It's only been like 3 years since more western streamers got into it. Also Anime is way more available now than when most of us were growing up. There are more Anime shows than western type cartoons nowadays. The only anime I saw as a kid was like Gundam and Robotech. Then nothing til like Pokemon and Sailor Moon in the late 90s.

Japan also doesn't tolerate the woke garbage that has been ruining western cartoons. They do have a notoriously blase attitude towards the sexualization of underaged girls which ranges anywhere from kinda awkward to basically unwatchable (talking about you Pedo Tensei) but it seems to just come from a place of cultural creepiness rather than the organized attempt to groom children/normalize degenerate behavior that you see in the West. The most popular titles don't have that shit at all.

In 2020 Demon Slayer outsold the entire US comic industry by itself.

Well here is one reason people like Vtubing. Less chance of shit like this.

Live in a castle state, staffer could immediately turn and gun him down. Even as the hired help zero chance they would ever convict.

I really enjoy twitch as background for live music. It was better before they cut funds to Russia but still plenty of solid channels that give a kind of piano bar or local band feel. Real nice while doing work. I sometimes come here wondering what my foh bros are up to, maybe something worthwhile... nope. Just vtuber talk.
