24 children die and you liberal fucks just can't wait to instantly politicize it.

Typical. You people are fucking sick.
Yeah because no conservative anywhere has ever instantly politicized a tragedy. Shut the fuck up you hypocritical faggot.

Time to walk and chew gum, Stannis! The American public can discuss the acceptable role of government in natural disasters while the rescue and recovery work happens in Oklahoma. The Republican Congressman representing the tornado damaged district in Oklahoma voted against the Hurricane Sandy aid bill, for what it's worth.

He's already singing a different tune:http://www.politico.com/story/2013/0...642.html?hp=r2I'm shocked, said absolutely no one.

Hey dummy: spending priorities are necessarily a political matter. Spending priorities can (and I'm not saying itdefinitelywould have mattered here) and often do affect whether or not people life or die (and how they live and die). Your argument is just a dodge to avoid talking about the failures of your shitty ideology. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sigh, come on guys, in the fucking weather thread? really?

Yes, every single school anywhere in the midwest should have a shelter capable of surviving a direct pass over from a fucking F5, just like how every single school needs armed guards and every square inch of coastline should have a 50 foot seawall to protect from Tsunamis.
You cannot possibly be this retarded?

Spent my childhood in OK. The reason everyone doesn't have basements isn't because they're dumb inbreds, it's because you literally need dynamite to get through that red, sandstone bedrock. Not alot of topsoil in Oklahoma, ever hear of that thing called the Dustbowl? It's not exactly financially feasible to stick basements everywhere, which is why most modern structures have built-in reinforced storm rooms. Today's tornado was one of those once in a generation type storms that are just so devastating, there's just not much you can do if you are in that path. Sucks because what was once a fifty year storm is happening a couple times a decade.

Maybe the funding they request for OK will actually be geared toward people impacted by the tornado, unlike a good portion of the Sandy (and Katrina) bill that was someones pet pork project that had no business being in a disaster relief bill.

Um, once in a generation? This is the 3rd time in less then 15 years this town has been hit by a major tornado and had major destruction.

If you cant do a basement/shelter, then do the reinforced room(s) but it didn't seem to have that either, since they were taking kids out of the school and down the street to a church.

Ya well, when they are still pulling out dead, drowned kids, it doesn't really seem the time or the place for that black hole of conversation.

Touche and point taken. I just don't understand a school system that can clearly afford top of the line athletic facilities can't at least have something in place to at least try outside of "just stand in an inside hall." Not trying to make this a political discussion at all, in fact I retract most of my ire after the comment about the soil conditions.

It's just when I saw reports that kids are being carted to a church nearby that actually has a storm shelter it just made my skin crawl a bit.

I said, what once WAS once in a generation, no longer is. Reading comprehension?

To the people saying shelters should have been built in/near the schools or but the church...

...stop and think about the level of construction needed to withstand a direct hit/glancing blow from a one to two mile diameter EF5 tornado with 200+ mph winds moving at 30'ish mph. News flash for those that can't keep up...the only things standing after direct hits from shit like this are bank vaults anchored into bedrock, the bank building is two counties over. Now think about the cost of building a structure like that able to hold 50-500+ kids depending on school size. Now think about the number of those structures needed in a city that size, just for school kids. Now add in hospitals, apartment complexes, sporting events, movie theaters, mega-malls, strip malls, churches. Since we're on the subject, how many miles should these structures be placed apart on the highways? 5 miles? 10 miles? One on each side of the highway or one side gets to play frogger?

You know why the search and rescue people aren't pulling dead bodies out of the church?, because the church didn't take the same level of a hit as the school did. Bad shit happens. I wish it never happened to kids but it does.

Someone above mentioned along the lines of, " but this city has been hit before and they didn't do anything..." Going to be harsh but this is Nancy Grace/Foxnews levels of over reaction. Before you post letting me know you were offended by that stop and think about the entire west coast of the U.S. and what will happen if any of the populated areas get hit with a 8.5+ earthquake. Has the east coast built a big ass wall to keep the next hurricane out? What's up with fucking Florida?!? Those rat bastards have stuck their dick in the last two elections when they should be hurricane proofing the entire goddamn state since they've been hit who knows how many times. Why the fuck didn't New Orleans bring in some dirt and raise the entire city up so they don't need the expensive levies that tend to break?

Mother Nature is a bitch, a total bitch, know why? Becuase every GODDAMN time humans have built structures or protection based on what they just went through, she shows up the next time with more and people still die.

Society/government can not and should not protect everyone from everything. A line has to be drawn somewhere. Usually that line is based on practicality, frequency of events, severity of events, etc, and yes the all important money. Regardless of where that line is drawn....people will still die.

Will wait and see what it looks like tomorrow. We went to Birmingham to help with the cleanup. We have a semi trailer full of equipment that's pretty handy. Generators, chain saws, portable coolers, fans, etc...We went it to Joplin, MO and were going to drive up the next day to meet it but it got turned away because they said they didn't want non red cross help at that time. It's all equipment left over from my business and we have consolidated the stuff that comes in handy for hurricanes (I live in a hurricane zone) and tornados and keep it around for such.

Holy shit people... At what point can we just say shit happens and move on? Lets pretend there is some sort of Tornado suit that will protect you from any Tornado in the world. Would you guys clamoring for a super bunker go out and drop XXX$ per suit to protect against the very remote chance a Tornado will hit you or your family??? Probably not... Just like most of you aren't sending your kids to school in Kevlar, so get over it! Shit happens, it sucks! It's called life.

I've never lived anywhere that had basements or tornado shelters, if a school has a hardened shelter and it's above ground how big does it have to be? Do they wind up building a hardened shelter adjacent to the school that's 1/2 the size of the school to fit all the kids in?

Here's the damage description of an F5 tornado taken from the old Fujita Scale article. They now use the Enhanced Fujita Scale to rate Tornados, but the only real difference between the two scales is estimated wind speeds which is lower on the EF scale, but the categories are still entirely about potential destruction.

Incredible damage.
Strong frame houses lifted off foundations and carried considerable distances to disintegrate; automobile sized missiles fly through the air in excess of 100 m (109 yd); trees debarked;steel reinforced concrete structures badly damaged.
So yeah, let me know where you're going to find the hundreds of millions of dollars to outfit every single school in oklahoma city with an F5 proof shelter large enough to protect all their students, and then the billions of dollars to outfit every other school in Tornado Alley.

My office is about 15 miles North of this (downtown OKC) - secretary lives in Moore. She's okay, but there is some significant damage to her home. Gave her the week off, which means I can watch porn in my office again until next Tuesday. Yippee. And no, practically no schools have storm shelters (or houses for that matter). Basements are really uncommon as well. Oddly enough, the church down the street from my home has a massive shelter (as do most churches).
