When you live in an area of the country where that is a non-issue, it does put into perspective how those sorts of things have to be constructed with that in mind. Like below ground basements. They're pretty much mandatory in the north, but you get surprised that basements aren't universal. Or things like natural gas lines freeze up when you've never encountered that. Or when your average rural town in the north probably has more plows and salters than half of the state of Texas.

With how bad the power situation in Texas is, things are gonna get worse. We’re just getting into the coldest parts and there’s another monster snow storm hitting tomorrow. Heaters sold out before this hit. Kinda ironic nobody can use them.

Soo, snow is officially up to my dogs ears. I went to let her out for the last time tonight and she ran out, took like 4 steps away from the porch, pissed then struggled to turn around and get back in the house. loi.

Blackouts in texas have been taking down street lights. Luckily everyone in this state is experienced with driving on snow and treats each other courteously on the roads.

Okay power is back. I had no power or phone server for about 24 hours.

The thing here is Austin and TX in general is just not prepared for this kind of thing. No new houses have fireplaces (built within the past 20 years). Houses from the 70s and earlier did. My house doesn't have one. Snowplows are not existent. My residential neighborhood is about a foot or more deep in snow right now and nothing to do about it. Nobody has snow shovels so you're seeing people out there with regular shovels moving shit out of the way.

i know this sounds crazy, but over here shop owners use those big old janitor brooms to keep the snow off their property after they shovel it. its likely not going to work for a foot of snow, but you can maintain your clear with the broom. i suggest, if you dont have a shovel and the snow is powdery. try to sweep it some. if you cant get rock salt. try sand or kitty litter for your walk.

Got a text from a friend in Rockwall outside Dallas. Said she had power on/off for the last day and probably had it only 4 hours on.

Instead of salt the highway department usually puts sand on overpasses so traffic kind of bust up the ice as it goes. A lot of times the ice is normally on on bridges and overpasses where they get cold from not having ground beneath them. This time just too much water was still coming down and just freezing as it ran down the road. I mentioned before at my parents house about 7 years ago everything was cold but then the ice melted from the sun in the trees and it froze coming down the hill and got about 2" thick. 4 degrees at my grandmothers place now about an hour from the border of Louisiana and Toledo Bend. She had central air and heat put in about 25 years ago but kept her dearborn gas heaters so she's in good shape and can also cook with no power. 15 here about an hour from Baton Rouge in MS now, at least the limbs falling quieted down.

Out of the normal cold was a problem but doable. Just too much water at the same time as single digit temps.

The ultimate shit. Saw overnight in NC and GA they had a tornado in low ass temp and the water from it was freezing soon as it hit the ground. We had quite a bit of thundering yesterday while it was freezing rain but no tornado thankfully.

It snowed about 10 inches here overnight. Absolutely everything is shut down here this morning. Kind of ridiculous, we're all used to driving in this shit. But you don't want the teenagers driving to school in it. Zero power outages, though. So there's that.

I walked outside. I assumed the all white was snow. Nope. Yard and driveway solid ice with a slight dusting of ice. I picked up a hammer I had on the porch and couldn't crack it. Couple inches thick. Came in before I became a statistic of broken bones. Supposed to above freezing for an hour today. Bet the horde breaks loose and everyone goes out driving at once to only have wrecks on bridges where the water down to.

I hope the great nation of Texas finally decides to join the rest of the states in a national grid so they do not freeze to death. Stay warm and safe fellow texans.

We have that same shit. Yards look like snow but it’s like the snow melted a little then froze solid as ice. Insane
