I'm not hating but I don't think there's any chance you gain muscle mass in the arms by walking.
I have seen lifters claim that squats/deadlifts help gains in other areas due to growth hormone stimulation. If that's true, then going from sedentary to walking 10mi/day might have a similar, albeit smaller, effect. I mean, visibly, it's probably mostly the leaning-out, but generally speaking, I think exercise flips some beneficial switches that we don't understand very well, or at least that don't typically get considered.

Get one of those at desk treadmills so you can walk 10 miles while shitposting on FoH
I don't need no treadmills, it's for the noobs. I can walk in the woods and shitpost ! It's optimal for the health, as the soothing nature will prevent incread BP from trolls !

I think the regularity of the exercices has some impact as well, I'm literally walking 15k steps AT LEAST, 99% of the days, sometimes up to 40k. Those millions of arms movements gotta trigger some growth. Of course, a single move of an arm while walking isn't much of an effort, but after dozens of millions in the last 4 years...

"cross-education"

Lifting on one limb can cause ~10% of the muscle growth and strength increase to manifest on the opposite limb. For example, if someone had shoulder surgery and their left arm is immobilized/restricted, they can lift heavy with their right arm and see some improvement on their left

I believe this is specific to left/right body symmetry, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some limited systemic effect.

Its a lifestyle change, not a diet. Thats why you fail and keep yoyoing.

Lost 35 lbs a few years ago and this is it. I didn't go crazy with dieting, just cut soda (wasn't even drinking all that much of it, maybe 1 can a day) and did 30-45 minutes of mild cardio while watching shit on youtube 3 times a week. Took a year but I never struggled and I kept it off for years too. Went from a 38 waist to a 32. Only once i finally stopped doing the regular exercise did it start creeping up again.

Don't get caught in the weeds of doing everything perfectly according to plan X and tracking micronutrient A B and C, consistency is what will get you results.

Best exercise is the one you actually do. It sounds trite but if you're trying to be less fat it's really all that matters.

Also - underrated tip:

Have self control at the grocery store. I am way too fucking lazy to run out midweek and get anything. If I have self control for one hour a week and don't buy Cheetos and Oreos and ice cream and frozen pizza, guess what I don't eat that week?

Once you get that down, then make it easy to eat the shit you're supposed to. Why do I grill 5lbs of chicken every 2 weeks? Because if I don't have it in the fridge when I need it, I'm gonna eat bullshit instead of just taking out a container and tossing it in the microwave for 45 seconds.

These are both things that require minimal effort one day a week, but make your journey SO much easier

One thing I started doing a year ago is i try and buy powder drinks and protein powder with no sugar. Then I have a bag of pure cane sugar and add it if I want a sweetener. One thing it did was trick my brain. Just looking at a tea spoon of sugar I'm like damn that's a lot. Then I'll only add like a half tea spoon. When you realize there is 10 tea spoons of sugar in just one can of soda it makes you not want to buy sugary drinks.

Have self control at the grocery store.

This is my one regular source of conflict with my wife. She's one of those terrible people who if they want potato chips opens the bag, eats one chip, and is satisfied. If she doesn't get the chip she's in a terrible mood. Her theory is to have everything available so cravings can be satisfied in small doses and don't fester.

This is NOT how my brain works in relation to food. If it's there, I eat it. Discipline is exerted at the store.

Imo the single biggest thing when it comes to losing weight. Not eating junk food is easy when it's not in your house.

This has always been a big problem for me anytime I tried cutting back. I always go to the store with a specific list, but husband likes to peruse each of the aisles and just finds random shit to get here and there.

Yo the gym is cool and all but have you guys tried raking goddamn leaves?

I just lost 7 lbs today in pure sweat, and that's after chugging 2 16oz water bottles to attempt and rehydrate.

So I couldn't rake up the leaves last fall on the account of the, yeah know, heart attack and stroke, so they laid all winter gathering up under trees and along the chain link fence compacting and composting and doing all the nasty shit that leaves do when you leave them to rot. After getting a quasi OK from cardio to push myself above 140 bpm I decided it was a nice enough day to handle yard work.

Fuck. Backpack blower, rake, and one of these fucking things:
91oNSgM4PFL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

FYI this thing is a piece of shit don't buy one of those. Couldn't pick up leaves that were just slightly embedded within the lawn, as the grass has started to grow, so after mowing the lawn all the leaves were too small for it to really grab, like it picked up half the leave clippings while shooting the other half all over the fucking place. Not to mention the basket fills within about 10 fucking feet so even though it only picks up half the shit you gotta empty it 90 fucking times. definitely great if you want to get your fucking steps in I guess. I know this isn't the product review thread but seriously, don't buy one of those. Unless you like walking every square inch of your lawn 30x over to pick up shit. About the only niche I found it excelled at is picking up grass clippings embedded within thick, low cut grass, works better than a rake or blower at that one singular thing.

4 hours, avg heart rate 176, max 192. burned 2130 calories according to my fitbit.
