Haha yeah. Today I woke up a little late, got in late. She was in a panic going g "oh my God are they going to be pissed? Will you get in trouble?"

Woman.. My boss comes in after 10am. He does not give a shit what hours we work as long as we deliver product on time. He doesn't care how or why or when I'm working as long as things get done. I don't even have a time card here and we have unlimited time off.
My boss doesn't even know if I go to work given that shes on the west coast... as long as I get stuff done.

What town do you live in Noodle? By him saying 1 lane bridge my quick map look makes it this one which means he's going straight West:

People that work odd hours can be kind of annoying if you have to frequently ask them questions.
Which is why its important to check your work email often if you do work some non-standard hours. Nothing is more annoying than needing something answered and the guy can't be reached because he decided to "work from home" for the afternoon and your email doesn't get answered until the next day.

And work for a company that makes checking email easy! Is it really still that cost prohibitive to have an Exchange(or some other type of push) server? Luckily, I work for a company that doesn't have much in the way of off-hours emails.

Anyone here worked remote across timezones? What's the expectation of the hours you should work? We just hired a guy that will be working from California. In fact, I think all our recent hires are remote because I guess Ithaca is tapped dry. My boss wanted to know what hours he'd be working and he said 10-6 PST. Shame on my boss for leaving it up to him, but 1-9 local time is going to be fucking annoying.

My current project has people working here (midwest) and in the UK. It is kind of a pain since we really only overlap a few hours a day. So if something comes up with the UK's code at noon I can't expect a response until the next morning.

Our BIOS team at EMC was based in MA and Shanghai. Sometimes our meetings would be setup so that we'd have it here at 8AM but for them it would be 9PM? 7PM? Can't remember the difference. During daylight saving we'd have to come in at 7AM because China doesn't have DST.

Our emails were basically on a 12 hour delay for responses, and EMC made it difficult as fuck to check emails on your phone - so it was basically a wash. We still got shit done because we took different platforms for each team, but it was hard to communicate and work with them.

At this place it was like a couple clicks on a website and now I'm getting email on my phone. And they send email all day and night - I got a few at midnight last night.

I haven't downloaded the email app on my phone simply because I don't want a constant connection with my inbox. But if I'm not in the office I make sure to manually check it every 30 minutes or so. The mobile Office OWA page is pretty nice and user friendly.

Having information (email) is always better than not having it. You just need to learn when to say, fuck that I'll look at that tomorrow and when to say, holy shit I need to run to my computer at top speed.

The issue is I've been on so many damn projects I get so much noise email. Like "This process is running slow" and performance threshold emails for things that are actually non-issues. I really need to set up some filters to stop getting this shit I just blindly delete so thats on me.

One of the best things I ever did was change from an "always on e-mail" job to a regular job. I used to have to answer emails at like 2:00am on a Friday or Saturday night, whereas now I shut down my PC at 5:00pm on Friday and don't check email until 9:00am Monday morning.

The first weekend after changing jobs it felt weird to not have my phone constantly buzzing all day and night.

I wish I had that luxury... I am expected to respond to emails almost 24/7. We had a data outage at 2am Saturday (yesterday) morning whereas it was 11 PM in California. I as in bed half asleep fooling around with the women when that occurred.

So due to the way payroll works at my new work, I'm pretty much going a full month without a paycheck, while normally it would be whatever. My girlfriend also is having to take the whole month off unpaid (for now) at the same time. We have enough stashed away that we can coast but living cheap this month and it sucks.

Conversely the way payroll works here I got paid my last paycheck at EMC, 80 hours of vacation, and my first week at the new job all within 1 week of eachother. Living large

Pretty similar for me... Got paid my last day at my old job, last paycheck two weeks later same time I got my first check at new job, and then the next week got 180 PTO hour payout check. Was a nice month.

Screw you, I'm over here drinking my own piss and you are up in your ivory tower.

It's actually pretty rough for me cause I used to get paid every Friday and it's mentally fucking with me that I haven't been paid.
