Going back in 30 degree weather this morning after 2 weeks off was brutal. I want hawaii climate.
My garage is heated and I park in an underground garage thats always about 60-65 degrees. Hardly noticed it was cold.

Live too far south to worry about heated, my shop is air conditioned tho. Best part of visiting Exxon in the summer when it's 105 out they make steam for a living and it's everywhere. They have an air conditioned 4 acre shop that contractors park in

Yea mine has heating elements in the floor, but no A/C vents so it's hot in the summer. I wouldn't want to pay to A/C it anyway but the heaters cost jack shit, I don't even notice them on my electric bill.

I have/had 3 phase and I never meet the minimum. I don't give a shit lol. Leave the door open when it's 105 out? I don't care.

But getting into the truck when it's so hot out in the summer is nice, especially at work if you have been out in the field

My car showed a sweet 28 degrees on the way into work this morning in North Carolina.

I work on the equipment floor and we keep it around 62 degrees at all times in the building 24/7/365 which sucks the life out of you.

I like the heat more than the cold. Mainly for the fact of when it gets abnormally cold here things go boom and not in a good way. When it got down to -2 in Baton Rouge once it blew so bad it demolished a block of homes and destroyed a Honda dealership (motorcycles) aross the street. Cracked the plaster in my mom and dad's cathedral ceiling 9 miles away.

Of course the flip side is when you have to go look at something and it's 100 out. Once at Exxon it was 100 in August and I looked a pressure vessel that was about to blow. They had 21 steam lances on it to keep it "cool". You know it's fucking hot when they use steam to cool something so it doesn't blow. Never been so hot in my life. I think I lost 10 pounds in 10 minutes.

Screw you, I'm over here drinking my own piss and you are up in your ivory tower.

It's actually pretty rough for me cause I used to get paid every Friday and it's mentally fucking with me that I haven't been paid.
I was with you at that same job. Fresh out of grad school and with the way they pay us I didn't get a check for 4 weeks.

I've also been drinking my own piss for awhile. My wife stopped working because we had the kid and we were fine for awhile but things were getting sketchy there. Blew through our savings (slowly, but still pissed it away). $79k seemed like a lot when I was fresh out of school, but as the years went on it just wasn't. My wife only made like $25k a year or so, but it helped us save a bit.

Now that I have the new job (and have seen my first check), we can live comfortably again. I was definitely there drinking piss for awhile though.

Go self employed for a while. You get paid 3-6 times a year. You live like a king for a while after a check comes in. You dig thru your couch for quarters to eat on the dollar menu before one comes in.

You had 80k saved up and having a kid took it all? Shit. Did you actually save the 80 or was it some kind of windfall?

Whatever your means is, you guys need to get comfortable living below it so you have some cash/investment reserves. You cannot let a month or two without income put you in jeopardy. I don't know what the appropriate amount of savings is but if you have anxiety about switching jobs because you might be without a check for a bit, you don't have enough.

I generally try and keep 2 months salary as liquid money in my checking account. When it starts getting into the 1mo range I start freaking out and drinking my piss.

I don't know if you need it in your checking account but reasonably liquid investments, index funds or whatever, that you can get to.

Do you guys really just spend all your money that you earn and then forcibly save 1-2 months worth as emergency?

I also keep maximum vacation rollover in my PTO account at work. We're allowed to roll over 240 hours so effectively I keep 6 weeks of salary in the bank there as well. Someone at work really put vacation bank into a new light saying it is one of the best earning investments. You make at minimum 3% per year on it through cost of living salary increase and sometimes can get a 8-15% return on it via a promotion.
