They basically took my freelance rate, which I arrived at by the old adage of "decide what you want to make, and triple it" and are paying me that as a part-time salary. I'm perfectly fine with them taking out taxes, but it'll probably impact my write offs next year. Having some 1099s to write off mileage etc. was always nice.
Uhh being W2 would be a huge advantage because then they'll pay both halves of your employment tax.

Oh I'm pretty sure I'm coming out well ahead. Like I said, who knows what he's charging the client considering what he's paying me for the work. It's not even difficult, just specialized.

Fucking TEKSystems! Am I right Khane? My current job with Dell/Boeing is through TEK. It's a shit show where everyone on the contract is way under paid but the experience is nice so I'll take it!

TEK is pretty huge so I guess I should be surprised that someone else is through them as well.

Consulting for the most part for a company like TEK usually sucks.

I have no complaints though because I wasn't actually looking for work when they contacted me so I just told them exactly what I wanted. If they didn't go for it that was fine, I had a pretty cushy job already.

I'm hired subs through TEK before...The amount they chop off the top from their subs is pretty sick. Especially since they don't kick me free lunches enough to justify it!

They only get ~29% of my billed rate. Which is really, really low for what they usually take.

But they love that shit. They take 30% as a standard for placing a full time hire, so taking almost the same amount for an indefinite contract that has already passed 1 year is gravy for them. They usually get a 1:1 take on those contract gigs.

EDIT: And I absolutely hate getting calls from my TEK recruiter bi-weekly to go to lunch. I wish they'd just leave me alone. It's getting tiresome.

I got contacted out of the blue by a contracting company in MA for a job at position at Lincoln Labs. Since the wife and I just bought a house i VA and moved for a salary I put what I thought was a ridiculous salary request, 200k. Person called back and said that should be fine.

Now I have to entertain the possibility of being offered the position, which I sort of don't want to do because moving sucks. On the otherhand it is 90k more than what I make now.

Uhh yea... you crazy man? 90k/yr isn't worth moving for? You could literally pay for EVERYTHING in the move to be done for you. Hell, ask them to pay for the move.

Yeah, any company willing to give you that type of salary is also usually willing to cover your moving expenses.. I mean, if you were moving from Montana to Manhattan I could see the 90K not being enticing, but anywhere else.. Dismissing a 90k/yr raise because it's a "pain" to move is just crazy talk.

Keep in mind Cambridge/Boston real estate prices are fairly absurd, I don't know how they compare to VA but you're talking $500k+ for small condos

I don't know where he lives but VA home prices can get up there too.

Of course it's a home with some property and more interior space. But almost doubling your already good salary is pretty big. Especially considering future endeavors will now have you bringing a $200k salary to the table as a bargaining chip.

Maybe it just shows how retarded the specific place I live is but the average price in Cambridge is like 40% of the average price in my city. But it's totally worth it because most of Dallas is stupidly shitty.

Don't you live in a rich neighborhood though? And you won't find any houses in Cambridge (or few, anyways). It's strictly city living

Maybe Cambridge as a whole... but you start getting towards Harvard Square and it's a different story. You're talking like $700+/sq ft.

And comparing just prices isn't fair. Compare price per square foot/acreage.
