Odd, I've almost never had compensation discussed during the phone screening. That's usually discussed during the in-person interview. Or the company just assumes "we're going to pay you this much!" and I tell them to fuck off.
I've almost had them all ask what pay scale I was expecting in a phone call. Normally I get calls from the owner but ocassionally a business might have a HR person that might screen 3 resumes and call to ask before they give them to the owner. I guess that's the benefit of small business.

Normally I give a huge ange because project manager in my industry means almost anything and it depends on the job. At some places it's similar to running the entire business and others it's basically a flunkie. I'm the ultimate person for pay scale flexibility however. It really does depend on the actual job to me.

I just accepted an offer with a direct competitor of my current company. It's 95% work at home (go into the office like twice a month for a few hours) and pays 17k/year more than I currently get (going from 43k to 60k a year). In addition, they're fine with letting me continue to work my Mon - Thur part-time teaching gig, which is not only fun, but gives me an extra 10k - 15k a year in fun money.

I expect to get a threatening NDA letter in the mail as soon as my current company finds out where I'm going, and I wouldn't be surprised if I get escorted out when I give my notice. However, I've been getting severely underpaid for my position and workload for nearly 2 years, so fuck 'em.

Well we'll see what happens. I have an interview tomorrow in an entirely different field than what I'm currently working in.

Grats McCheese!

So I started my new job yesterday. It's only been one day but everyone seems pretty cool and my boss is pretty great.

On that same note, the company that bought my old one (Sprint preferred retailer) is really fucking shit up, 1/3 of the company as I kne wit has jumped ship and they've had to temporarily close two locations due to lack of staff. Glad I got out of there when I did.

Did you sign a non-compete when you started at your current firm? If not, then there's nothing your employer can do (or even posture) to stop you from leaving to a competitor.

Not a non-compete, but I did sign an NDA and there are going to be several dozen projects at my new company which I won't be allowed to so much as touch since my old (well, current) company was involved and I had access to tons of sensitive, proprietary information. I've seen the letter they send when they get butthurt at people leaving, and it's mostly just lawyer hot air and standard practice for the industry (government contracting) since it's so incestuous. People jump ship to competitors all the time.

NDA doesn't mean shit. They'd have to show you disclosed something covered by the NDA. You can work on any project you want, just don't disclose anything covered.

Of course. It's just easier to completely avoid those projects rather than have to worry about disclosing something you shouldn't. Everyone I know who has moved to direct competitors has done that; after all, there is no shortage of work, so it doesn't really matter if you sit out some stuff until the NDA expires.

Found a site recently that has helped me at least do a little research on companies where I'll be moving too (Portland OR area). glassdoor.com

Funny reading reviews about my own company, and agreeing with most of the negative. It's how I know that at least most of the company reviews are probably legit. Granted, people unhappy are always more vocal than those that are happy.

Glassdoor used to be really awesome with being able to look up average salaries and stuff. Now I don't think they list salaries anymore and you need a subscription and shit.

Yes, a glassdoor account is free for like 7 days then they ask you to write a review of your own company which takes like 30 seconds depending on how honest/thorough you want to be.

I put in my 2 weeks notice today, and the company told me not to bother coming back next week. So I guess I have a two week vacation.

I can understand this attitude for IP reasons, but were they just dicks about it? I have never understood a company getting mad at someone for leaving to a better paying position. Sure they probably invested time into you, but did they counter or even try to keep you? You have to figure in turnover and retraining or increasing salaries in your workforce....

They've let numerous people who have far greater access to information than I have stay for 2 or more weeks after putting in notice. My manager is just butthurt that I'm leaving. No counter offer (I didn't expect one) and no acknowledgement besides a canned, HR-required email.

That is just shitty then. I would be excited that someone I worked with was going off to make more money on better terms, assuming I didnt hate them. Then screw them, go clean out your desk.
