I'm considering getting a Rivian as a daily driver. I recently came into procession of a small solar array, and with all the research I've done it looks like I could actually power the car with just solar. I'm not talking about longer trips and such, but day to day if I plug it in overnight it will always be ready to go in the morning. I like the look of them, and I drove one today. Surprisingly peppy, and the handling is outstanding. Comfortable, too.

What do you guys think?

I’ve been a big fan for a while and would get one in a heartbeat. From everything I’ve read/seen it sits in a really nice middle ground of fun/daily driving/traditional truck functionally. There are vehicles in that price range which do any of those better, but not all 3.

I’m in OC so I see them on the road all the time, taunting me.

I've seen a lot around here, too. Any time I'm in a parking lot and see someone getting out of one I ask them how they like it, and without exception every single one of them raves about it.

I'd drive it, I just can't afford a Porsche. Maybe a 944 or 914
Regardless of the purchase price of a "classic" Porsche, you can't afford it. Heck the 1-2 year ownership price would probably be less on a 991 911 than a 944 or 914.

New (last ~15-20 years) porsches are high quality vehicles that hold together and are what you would expect from a car. Pre-2000-ish porsches are gigantic pieces of shit that serve to keep shops and parts makers in business.

Just my opinion, I've owned several. Burren is probably the expert.

Why wouldn’t they? You think someone will complain about their new expensive world-saver?

I have a friend that's into Porsches both old and new and can confirm that not a single word of this is wrong. The classic 911 is one of the best looking cars of the 20th century but if you can't afford to drop 5-10k on a repair at the drop of a hat, it's going to be a financial nightmare.

The size of the cottage industry that survives on doing nothing but keeping old 911s from rotting away is staggering.

Doctor my mom has worked for, forever, him and his eldest sons were Porsche nuts- Doc was like 6ft 6 and still drove his daily, would go nearly every other year to get one from Europe. Over the years they just kinda accumulated, every house they had/rented as the kids did college and move off, had at least 1 sitting there with its trickle charger doing its thing... the father has since passed.. the son has one of those 2.5 story garages with the carousel thing, "maybe one day I will pay to have all of them taken apart and put into one that works"

They almost always got white.. dunno why... just seems blah esp when you order these things, choose some more fun color!

Best comment on the original tweet before it was deleted was, 'A Tesla would have stopped.'

what a faggot, crashed into 2 cars and still managed to get halfway into a building means he just stomped on the peddle thinking it was the brake

That’s a selling point right?

I drove one for a day and started out hating it. It was the middle of winter and we had an ice storm the night before. They do the Tesla bullshit where you don't really start the vehicle, it's just ready to go when you get in the seat while possessing the fob. Normally that's fine, but I needed to run the heat to help defrost the windows and I literally ended up needing to sit in the damn thing for 15 minutes instead of brushing/scraping. This probably wouldn't be an issue if you owned it since I believe it's possible to do with the phone app.

I thought their infotainment system was really kludgy and not intuitive. Again, would probably overcome that eventually if you own it. One cardinal sin though: no Apple CarPlay / Android Auto.

Quality-wise, it had some ill-fitting trim/body panels and some really amateur looking paint in places - looked like crappy Maaco bad. The tonneau cover sounded like it was near death when operating too. Model I drove was pretty early on in production, so, they might have hammered some of this out. It did drive ok, was quite peppy, and seemed comfortable.

Overall, it had some cool ideas and was an ok package, but I didn't think it was worth the price. I'd have reservations about service and support if things went wrong. Plus I'd say they have an outside shot of going under in the next 5 years. Probably the least likely of the new US EV OEMs outside of Tesla due to their Amazon deal, but they are pissing away money (Fisker and Lucid I consider dire).

Isn't that some of the shit posted months ago that's some kind of simulation (game?) Not sure I'd be using that to make decisions.

I’m curious how long ago this was, from what I understand they’ve made quite a few improvements with infotainment. Redesign and just/are about to offer the fancy tonneaux cover.

At this point we’re still in “early adopter” territory so you pretty much have to expect some stuff like this. From what I can tell they’re moving in the right direction 🤷‍♂️
