That's money well spent. Yeah, I've got buddies who would do it for nothing, but I wouldn't let them. If I have a buddy who is a Volvo expert and I'm looking to buy a Volvo I'm going to pay him for his time. Expecting him to do his job for free because he's a buddy is unreasonable. Yeah, I'll spend a day traveling for a buddy if they buy me lunch, but I don't work much, and I'm not working on Volvos for a living, and all I would be is a ride, not a mechanical expert. Couple hundred bucks is an awesome price. If you got it home and brought it to a garage for them to have a look to make sure it was all good what do you think they'd charge? And what if it comes back and is not all good? Very reasonable.- 2

At least with my friends, this is definitely akin to the "come help me move" thing. We all did it when younger, but as we're older and more established, that type of thing drops off. I'm definitely way too old to go help someone move, movers ain't that expensive, and taking a full day off would cost me a lot.
That said there are definitely friends that I'd go see a car with, especially if it's a fun car. Depends on the friend.

Volvo = expensive to repair trash. Repair often.Man. I used Craigslist and found like the perfect car I was looking for. It's a coupe hours drive, but might be worth it. My buddy works on Volvo's and said he'd take the trip for a couple hundred.

Done a lot of checking out cars but I now only do them for people I know have realistic expectations. Many just want a good-as-new car with no outstanding maintenance for cheap. And they want this or that specific popular model and it can't be older than 5 years. Sorry, so does everyone else which is why prices are the way they are.

Some faggot did a hit and run while parked on my 7 month old truck. Dent in metal bumper front bumper. Looking like it’s gonna be $5000 out the door as bumper needs to be replaced, sensors recalibrated by dealer and rental car etc…

What sensor needs to be recalibrated? I'm not aware of any OEM that requires a calibration for the SONAR sensors. The RADAR does need a calibration, but depending on the vehicle, doesn't always sit low enough for a bumper strike to impact anything.
