One of my cats is gonna lose a leg. We took him to the vet because we felt a small bump on his leg. They did a biopsy and said it was “Injection Site Sarcoma”. Very rare but it does happen when a cat’s immune system reacts poorly to either the vaccine or the needle, not sure which or even which vaccine. He’s had a few, all from the same company.
The tumor cannot be removed, we’re told, because of its shape and if they attempt it, they are certain the cancer will return aggressively. The ‘cure’ is to remove his left rear leg and that is almost 100% successful so that’s what’s happening the first week of January.
The vets and oncologists all say we are lucky. Had he received vaccines in his shoulder or scruff the diagnosis would have been a death sentence. I don’t feel lucky. It’s breaking my heart. He’ll adapt quickly I’m told but it doesn’t cheer me up any. The only good, is that the vaccine manufacturer feels bad about it, too, and is footing the bill.
I'm with you. One of our dogs had her front right leg amputated 2 weeks ago due to osteosarcoma (bone cancer). It was heartbreaking for us, but she's super happy, pain free, and running around. Animals are resilient.
