i would guess they had a deal for at least 3 to start with. think i read show runners were wanting 5 or so, but also wanted more money and episodes per season. it already went from estimated $10m per in s1 to $12-14m per ep in s4. think it did better than citadel which amazon sunk a ton into, something like $300m for season1.
until recently would thought they would keep it going for 4 or so, just to alternate with rings of power, but amazon got the rights to fourth ring series which is romance with dragons or something

Objectively, it's a decent generic fantasy show.
Subjectively, it's nails on a chalkboard and the TV equivalent of sitting through your middle schooler's class performance of Shakespeare. On the bright side, at least you don't have to pretend it was really good to avoid hurt feelings.

wonder what the odds are this show gets cancelled after s3 drops, amazon (and everyone else now) is finally cracking down hard on shit that isn't driving subs. I mean with 3 seasons behind this show after this year its gonna be almost impossible to get new people to watch the show, its "too much time to catch up" which is a huge problem for a mediocre show.

unless they have some crazy 4-5 year agreement it is probably done. iirc s2 lost like 60% of s1 viewership. supposedly in 2019, the budget was to be $80-100m per season, but with covid they ended up spending over $250 for the 2.
RoP has far higher production values, but even the butchered corpse of the story in WoT is way better than RoP.
If you aren't a book fan, it's decent generic fantasy.

Given how ugly some of the aes sedai are, don't hold your breath hoping for the aiel to look any better. My wife said either nynaeve or egwene (I can't remember which) were supposed to be prettier than everyone else in the world. Those actresses would both have to move to nebraska to be 8s.
I will say that what we've seen of the aiel so far have at least looked like passable red heads.
