It's not natural gas, most sources of carbon monoxide aren't exactly obvious. It's one of the more common accidental deaths even today. Heater or something starts leaking it in winter when windows and doors are kept shut, and you die before you notice anything is wrong.

I think when they are saying "gas" they are talking more about carbon monoxide, It is colorless and odorless so when you get a leak in your house you will never know it.
