I assume most or nearly all people have a smoke/mono alarms in their homes by now. Don't insurance companies require it?

How would they know without an inspection even if they required it. I'm sure mine sends shit reminding me to have one but they have never required it. Maybe in some places that have really tight permit laws require a hard wired one to sign off on, but we don't have that stuff. I have home insurance, but it's not required for me either since I don't have a mortgage.

I think in NJ it's required by law. I'm not sure now.

Lots of people unplug them because they are sick of them going off when you cook bacon.

CO detectors also have a limited use life if I recall - you’re supposed to replace them within 8-10 years I think, otherwise they lose a lot of their capacity to detect CO

Some interesting updates online. They suspect Gene died approximately 10 days before he was discovered (they said his pacemaker no longer registered activity after the 17th) and think he had suffered a recent fall. They also said nothing appeared to be missing/stolen. Wife was found in the bathroom and dog in bathroom closet. They don't know whether Gene or his wife died 1st.

The dog in the closest is the odd part. Someone could have put the dog in there, or maybe the dog was in the closet and another dog jumped on the door and accidentally trapped it inside.

Toxicology will probably be the most help whenever they get that back. Decomposition might mess up some results, though. Same with autopsy depending on how bad it was.

The new ones I bought don't have replaceable batteries. Probably for that reason. The batteries die you have to replace the unit.

Preliminary tox negative for gas poisoning on all bodies.

Going with natural causes for Gene at this time and suicide for his wife with the pills for now.

Totally possible gene falls and dies in their mudroom, wife hears this, is having panic attack races to bathroom for her medicine to calm down but collapses and dies cus it was a heart attack not a panic attack.

They also clarified the dog that died was in a kennel not a closet. It could have been the case the wife was in the middle of opening the kennels to let the dogs out while gene was opening the back door to take them for a walk/let them go out to shit.

Don't know the layout of their house but gene falls in the mudroom and died there, back door was open the 2 living dogs were using it, wife is dead in bathroom near the front door which is next to the room the dogs kennels are.

Sounds like the dog had it the worst. Were they recluses or something? It seems strange that no one found them for so long. Even if their family didn't miss them, rich people usually have housekeepers and landscapers and whatnot coming by.

That's a good point, especially ones that old. I mean, yeah, his wife wasn't ancient like he was, but I can't imagine she wanted to clean their mansion.

News article I read is that landscapers and the like would show up once every 2 weeks or so, but they rarely had interactions with them.

The kennel thing makes more sense than a closet, poor dog. With that detail I suspect this is probably just a sad situation of one of them dying and the other is distraught and dies, either accidentally or naturally.
