yeah that was my thought. like, what does resigning ACTUALLY mean? it sounds like a big deal but is it really just that he has to remove a line off his resume?
i am pretty sure it just means he doesn't get a vote on the Oscars and get dozens of DVDs mailed to his house any more, since I am pretty sure screeners are still distributed that way, and not digitally nor in 4k.

Anyone in his family could be a member to still get the screeners and invite him to the Oscars as their +1. Effectively meaningless unless the academy bans them all.
people don't join the academy for the free screeners, they join to get the "prestige" of voting. also, i did some small research and that is literally the only benefit. someone who is not a member of the academy can still be invited to the awards, can still make movies, and can still be nominated. getting screeners and voting is the ONLY thing he can't do anymore.
