The girl who does my teeth says you need to be a little mean to your gums to toughen them up. That could just be her thing though.

You need to stimulate your gums, but the tissue isn't supposed to be callused ;p Medium bristles are too harsh and you'll end up with injured gum tissue with repeated brushing on your gums. Maybe she meant if your gums bleed even with a soft bristle? Typically healthy gums won't bleed when brushed gently, but you can get gums healthy by regular and proper brushing of them if they do bleed. After awhile, they shouldn't bleed anymore if you are regular about it and aren't trying to sand the tissue down ;p

I always had gum bleeding issues when is floss and was told by the dentist to quit being a little bitch and floss like I had a pair. A week or so later it stopped bleeding and hasn't since
