The times when this strategy doesn't work are just probably more easily remembered than all the times it does. Mexico was 5 minutes away from 1-0 win and then the media would be taking about how Mexico did exactly what they needed to do to win (get a goal and protect their lead).Far from an expert on the game here, but Mexico lost because of Mexico's coach. Watched the whole game and it was clear what his strategy was. You take your foot off the gas with a single goal lead? To me you never call off the dogs unless the game is a rout and you're trying to be respectful of your competition. 1-0 is not a rout, I don't care what sport it is.
Was it because the heat was destroying players and he had no choice? Maybe that's what I'm missing with my limited soccer knowledge.
was a solid defense....Wow, solid defense there, Greece.
Except that doesn't happen. Having your keeper sent off with a yellow/red means he misses next match. And good luck arguing with the ref for 3 minutes, red card will follow.Yeah he could get sent off by delay of game, but what would be the point? He would discuss and lament at the ref for 3 mins and take another 5 mins to get of the pitch, and on top of that a bench keeper has to get subbed for a field player taking yet even more time off the clock, delaying the game even further. I despise that shit, hand out penalties for that crap would crush it, its not like the refs arent bought allready anyway.
People throw themselves in the way of the ball all the time in regular play. It also happens rather frequently that the free kick ends in the wall, e.g. Ronaldo's kick into the 1 man wall consisting of Philip 'The Mountain' Lahm.Ok, so what is the point of the shaving cream line or whatever on the free kick? The guys there seem to never even come close to blocking a kick and no one has a free hand anyway because they're all protecting their balls the whole time. Very odd looking play in general for the novice viewer. Or does a hand ball count there too? Seems pretty shitty to just try and throw yourself in the way of the ball.
