This from the guy who's been shit posting for the last umpteen pages. Awesome.

If they're doing Freeport in Voxels then presumably they're doing the other cities in voxels.

Re-read what I wrote. I didn't say you couldn't make nice things with voxels, I said it was significantly harder to make nice things with voxels because you have to do lots of stupid things to, for example, make something look thin.

Math how does it work? 40,000ish people logged into the EQ progression servers at start - that was a little under 10% of the max population for EQ (roughly 500,000 at it's height in 2002 or so). 10% of WoW's max would be between 600,000 or so (using only US numbers).

As I mentioned earlier, I think the people - include former SOE devs - have found out that building an entire world in Voxels was a terrible idea: it's much harder to make really nice looking things with voxels then it is with traditional modeling tools. For example doing something like...

Actually I'm going to go further: You couldn't be more wrong. People want something new, yes, but people also like old familiar things. Look at WoW there is an untapped market for Vanilla WoW/WoW Progression servers that is currently only being met by third parties like Emerald Dream (if it...

You do it for exactly the reasons stated previously: EQ had horrendously dated graphics and EQII was its own little disaster - so you release a graphically improved EQ for those folks to play while working on EQNext with all the bells and whistles.

Science!! Fucking magnets, how do they work?

I'm only in Intro to Physics but I'm pretty sure Black Holes beg to differ (with @ambiturner who's on my block list but whom you quoted).

Don't conflate what I want with what I'd accept especially since you're the guy who asked "What do you want" and then apparently didn't read my reply. I'd have accepted EQ with dynamic mobs and better graphics, but what I want is a lot more than that.

You're probably right because SOE is incompetent: however, on the off chance someone there was competent and saved the art assets and code for EQ 3 (2nd Gen) they could restart the project from Square two or three, instead of zero.

Butler has stated - and got me if you can find the source as this was back in 2013 when he was talking up EQN - that the last before EQNext iteration of EQ3 was basically a reskinned EQ1 (paraphrasing here) but that everyone (presumably SOE internal staff only) who played it got bored as too...

Well that explains Draegen's support of FTP. As for shifting the discussion, I'm still stuck on the 'its a WoW clone' claims by Itzena and Draegen. For example, Rift is a WoW Clone that did okay for a while but last time I checked seems to be dying a long slow death. SWTOR, not so much a WoW...

    EQ Never

FTFY. Your post reminded me of the 100+ million cost of the game which EA hasn't recovered. If you want to call it a WoW clone, go ahead, I thought the combat in beta back in 2010 was shit compared to WoW's combat with some weird duck and cover mechanic or something but maybe things have changed.
  21. tad10

    EQ Never

Eh. SWTOR isn't really a WoW clone, unless the combat has changed from what I remember and it's not really successful given that it's a major IP and IIRC EA/Bioware had lots of layoffs because it didn't meet expectations. But perhaps I'm misremembering - it isn't a game I followed past Beta.

    1. Games need to be a little bit "fuck you" instead of "pull the free slot machine" to be, you know, interesting, challenging and have long-lasting appeal. 2. Quest grinding is worse than mob grinding unless you really, really like 400 collect 10 bear asses quests. 3. @Zzeris take a...

I would have replaced Grim's comment with: "There is something to be said for getting a product out your playerbase has been asking for instead of shitcanning two different visions over five years and restarting in late 2012, even if it means that product doesn't have all the latest whiz-bang...

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

Just a riff on "How many roads must a man walk down, before you can call him a man" and etc. But I think we can all agree: there should be a folk song about giant dongs. Anyway, I think you can summarize your post above with the following: Gentlemen, I present to you EQNext, the MMO...

But the thing is - and the giant elephant in the room seems to be - it's not a very good toolset for building an MMO. I have a friend who has become quite proficient with Landmark and AFAIKT pretty much everything he has done could have been built faster and better using traditional 3D modeling...

  31. tad10

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

EQNext is a fundamental misunderstanding of their MMORPG playerbase. In terms of tech improvements, MMO players just wanted more dynamic mobs, perhaps a bit better interactivity with the environment then current MMOs allow (say the ability for a rogue to climb a wall to break into a castle) and...

As I said, there's a theoretical fix for ensuring new players are always directed to worlds that are alive at the low level. But, yes, since it is theoretical it's pointless for me to argue for it since unless or until it is put into practice I can't assert it will work. -_- So in addition...

Nah, it's just time for someone to make an EQ I/Vanilla WoW like MMO that tries to avoid all the stupid mistakes those MMOs made while adding something new (like semi-dynamic mobs). If your main concern over levels are empty low level zones then for the record there is a an interesting fix...

Yes, levels are a good idea for an MMORPG. 1. Feeling advancement. Better and clearer with levels. 2. Designing appropriate content for your players. Significantly easier with levels. 2b. Designing new expansions. Significantly easier with levels. 3. Knowing your place in the world...

Has Smedley said his bit about how terrible it is that he had to let all the awesome people go. Smedley CEO: Buy drinks for people who got fired because he ran the Company aground. Good CEO: Run the Company well, so people don't have to get fired and can buy their own drinks.
