According to wikipedia, "If the blacked-out nationally televised game is on a cable television network such as ESPN or the NFL Network, all cable and satellite television providers in the affected markets, including the primary markets of both teams, must black out the cable network's signal to customers in affected markets during the game"could someone explain the blackout thing for me?
So ESPN couldn't have aired the game in San Diego, even on ESPN, if it was locally blacked out. Thus ESPN was stuck with either eating the cost of however many tickets or irate customers in the San Diego area.
