Why is it the year after someone expresses a desire to break Dickerson's record, they tank so hard? Almost halftime and he doesn't even have 10 yards on the ground yet.
This made me want to go look up the stats. In the year following their 2000 yard season, the RBs did the following:
AP - 483 yards (5 games) - before this game
Chris Johnson - 1,364 yards
Jamal Lewis - 1,006 yards (12 games)
Terrell Davis - 211 yards (4 games)
Barry Sanders - 1,491 yards
Eric Dickerson - 1,234 yards (14 games)
OJ Simpson - 1,125 yards (14 games*)
* - OJ played when there were only 14 reg. season games.
So only Barry got even close to 1500 yards in the following season, but 1,491 was still his lowest total in 5 years and he fucking retired after that. Davis played 17 games in the next 3 years and then retired. Jamal Lewis became a 3 yards and a cloud of dust back. Chris Johnson actually had the best follow up season yardage wise, but he has become kind of a joke in that every carry he gets either nets somewhere between -2 and 2 yards, or is a 60+ yard TD.
Both Dickerson and Simpson ran for 1800+ yards 2 seasons after they ran for 2k, so they didn't fall off the map. And in Simpson's case 1800 was the equivalent of a 2000 yard season in a 16 game schedule. Dickerson, Sanders and Simpson are the only 3 to run for at least 1800 in a season other than their 2k season (Dickerson twice).
Chris Johnson and Jamal Lewis 2ks, as most probably already think, seem like fluke seasons where they just managed to break a number of long runs. Between the 2, in the 12 seasons they've had so far other than their 2000 yard seasons, 1364 is the highest yardage total.
No real points to make regarding AP, just thought it was interesting stats to look up.
