Is there a downside to HGH? I remember when Stallone was taking it for the last Rambo movie he basically said it's the elixir of life and we should all be taking it after age 40.
From my limited reading, HGH is only moderately effective as a "steroid." That's why I mentioned insulin. I guess insulin and HGH are somewhat competing hormones, so if you take one, the other drops. But if you supplement with both of them, you can balloon up. I think the insulin also helps with any negative effects from the HGH (like insulin sensitivity which can lead to the two previous posts).

I honestly don't know enough about it to comment. I'm sure there aresomedownsides, but there are any time you're playing with hormones. That doesn't stop millions of women from taking birth control every day though. You just have to weigh the pros with the cons.

But like I said above, this whole sports coming down hard on HGH testing is a farce. It's impossible to test for. Within 24 hours, your system is basically completely back to normal.

I thought I read somewhere recently that there's evidence that HGH ironically decreases your total life expectancy?

This is the best article I've read on PED's. There's a lot of confusion and mislabeling among sports fans and the general public concerning what different athletes in different sports use and why and how they work. This article is pretty specific to cycling but does have some more general and historic information, and there's some HGH specific info. Good read if you find your self interested in how this sort of thing operates, beyond what you hear on ESPN and other bullshit mainstream media.

I'm reading this at the moment:Growth hormone, IGF-I and insulin and their abuse in sport

Of particular interest is this

Very recently, a well designed and executed study in past abusers of anabolic steroids showed for the first time an ergogenic effect of GH in healthy young athletes (Graham et al., 2008).

A further problem with the designs of our clinical trials is that they are designed to test one or at most two interventions. In reality, for the reasons described above, GH is frequently used by athletes in combination with insulin and anabolic steroids in varying concentrations during differing training and dietary regimens. It is impossible to control for all these variables within a single trial, and therefore it seems likely that the athletes using the 'n=1' design are probably best placed to address the question whether GH is performance enhancing. This certainly appeared to be a potent weapon when abused by the former East German coaches (Franke and Berendonk, 1997).

A definitive answer to this question will probably never be found, as it would be difficult to obtain ethics approval for a suitable study. It should be remembered, however, that there were similar arguments about anabolic steroids 20 years ago that have subsequently been shown to have performance benefits.
So basically, they have no idea, and will likely never know.

Also, regarding the time it remains in your body:

The half-life of endogenously secreted GH is around 13min (Sohmiya and Kato, 1992). It is rapidly cleared from the body by the liver, kidney and peripheral tissues through interaction with GH receptors. If recombinant human GH (rhGH) is administered intravenously, the half-life is similar to endogenously secreted GH (Refetoff and S?nksen, 1970; Haffner et al., 1994). In practice, however, the pharmacokinetics of exogenously administered GH differs, as it is given by intermittent, usually daily, subcutaneous injection. Following injection, GH concentrations increase and reach a maximum concentration after about 2-6h, depending on the age and gender of the recipient (Kearns et al., 1991; Janssen et al., 1999). The estimated bioavailability of rhGH is 50-70%, because of degradation at the site of injection. This may explain why intramuscular injection results in a higher maximal and area-under-the-curve GH concentration than subcutaneous injection (Keller et al., 2007). Thereafter, rhGH is rapidly cleared and GH is usually undetectable in women 12 hours after injection, even after high doses, while men have only low levels of GH. (Giannoulis et al., 2005). There is quicker clearance of GH in women, probably reflecting their extra body fat that contains a high density of GH receptors (Vahl et al., 1997). Longer-acting GH preparations are currently being developed.
Oh, and the only side effects it mentions are sodium retention, diabetes (40%), and cardiomyopathy.

Steroids are similar to marijuana in that they are not nearly as bad for you as the media makes them out to be. Taken in safe dosages, they're actually good for you. Too much can cause serious health problems like any medication.

As far as the hgh testing, supposedly there's a test that's been developed recently that can detect it for longer periods of time. Haven't heard any details on the time frame or accuracy

Holy shit all 3 of them are FA's next year???? If that is the case I would be more worried about becoming Detroit where something like half your cap is tied up in 3 players.
My mistake. Bengals have another year on both Dalton and Green. Only Atkins will be a FA next year.

I think McNabb is just jealous of RG3's potential, and that is the only reason why he wanted to be a role model.

Yes, but they really will need to be looking into locking up at least one, if not both Dalton and Green next year. Unless you plan on tagging one of them (which obviously comes with its own headaches) you generally don't want them to get to FA.

Might be part of it...or the simple fact he's playing for the Skins which was where he had his last "real" season and it was a massive failure. Really though I think he's just butt hurt over guys not instantly turning to him as a voice of wisdom. No more spotlight, he craves the attention.

I think its that he's working for ESPN and you need to be an over the top fake-controversy generating asswipe to make a name there.
