Not really sure how I feel about that ruling. I get it's a rule and all, but the dude was in the process of falling in to the endzone and it was clear no one was able to actually stop him during that. Headless or not.

That is a dogshit rule...how does it make sense? The play automatically dies to protect a guy who had already been hit and just hadn't stopped moving forward yet? What does that achieve? I guess if the player can still take action after losing the helmet it's another story...but not on that play.

edit: The rule makes sense in general, like the Witten play they mentioned where he went another 15 yards. Can't have a guy without a helmet out there in a full speed head on collision. But here it's just a shitty situation for them.

Yeah, but you don't have exceptions like that for rules. Helmet off = Play is dead. It is just an ugly situation for it to apply.

It's just a way for the league to avoid paying out lawsuits. That's all these stupid "player protection" penalties are. It gives them a leg to stand on, when these guys are vegetables in 30 years.
I actually understand the point of the rule if the player is still able to make decisions and run around and shit. Dunno...I guess it'd be hard to grant exceptions for players who lose their helmet and still gain yardage/TDs due to inertia that cannot be stopped regardless, which is clearly what happened to Bell there.

You hear so much about the "spirit of the rule" when applied to rules in sports, and that ruling against the Bell TD was the exact opposite of the spirit of the rule. The intent is that it prevents a player from losing his helmet and then continuing to try to run down the field and avoid being tackled, etc. A play being ruled down early in the middle of a guy going to the ground is not the spirit of the rule, and protects nobody. In fact, I'd say it gives more incentive for defensive players to try to rock ball carriers near the goal line and remove their helmets with big hits in a world where the NFL is trying to cut down on said hits.

Man that's such a shot...does 22 get to sit out a game on top of the usual fine? And the fucking zebras with the non call for helmet to helmet...about as useless as tits on a bull if they're going to miss that one or let it go.
