I don't understand why winning a championship that also happens to be in a city that had a recent tragic event has anything to do with an individual award.

But then again, all Boston fans are functionally retarded most of the time.
the entire premise of the award is based on humanitarian principles demonstrated by great athletes.

what the motherfuck are you talking about?

citing "sportsmanship" which basically means the olympics or winning a SB after Katrina.

I still don't see how David Ortiz qualifies as a humanitarian for winning a World Series.

I don't think you know what the word sportsmanship means. Hitting hum dingers in the same general area that something bad happened in no way qualifies.

no i know what sportsmanship means, but in context of the award it's not given the most gracious loser.

if it were, then truly Peyton deserves it more than any other athlete

Didn't Ortiz use PED? He's qualified for the annual "go fuck yourself" award...that's really about it. You don't pass up a player with legitimate accomplishments for a guy like that just because he plays in a city that had a terrorist attack.

And where are the Cardinals fans? That's been one of the surprising teams this season. It's a bummer that playoffs aren't likely for them with the NFC West being so strong. I still feel like they are owed a Super Bowl after Kurt Warner's amazing comeback.
Catching up on this thread, Cardinals fan here. Looking forward to going 11-5 and not making the playoffs. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but a football guru pal says that Seattle will be benching all their starters in the second half this weekend so they don't get hurt, which gives us a chance to win. It would be nice if Atlanta decides to show up and beat the 49ers, or Carolina next week.

If Seattle is sitting its starters in the 2nd half, its cause you guys have been blown out so bad there is zero chance you can win. We are still playing for homefield/NFC West and first round bye. They are going full tilt balls to the wall on sunday.

Sportsman of the Year should have gone to the common, everyday fan that has had to deal with overpaid athletes complaining about how underpaid they are. Or how an athlete gets a boo-boo and needs to rest for weeks on end and gets paid every cent of his (or her) contract while idling. How the same prima donnas will ~threaten~ to move to another team if their demands are not met. To sit in some nose bleed section of a stadium that required a small loan to pay for tickets while being charged an arm, a leg, and your other arm for drinks, food, or any current sporting memorabilia. Or to sit at home and listen to a pair of announcers rambling on about something off the wall while there is "dead" time during a game. And to remain loyal to a team through their worst, only to get shut out during their best by the sudden influx of new fans with deep pockets.

That is the person who should have won this award.
