For all the people saying the new TV deal will make the cap explode, isn't that some massive hopium? It's not like the NFL is finding some huge unknown audience to pump their numbers even larger. There's a reason they don't go very far back when they discuss NFL ratings now outside of saying this Superbowl was a 52 year low. That's not the only place they've lost viewers. The NFL may still have best rated TV, but the networks aren't the US government. The money isn't free and imaginary.

Well, adding one game will add a fair bit of revenue. The cap increased by an average of 10 million a year from 2012 to 2020. The anticipated airing rights deals are expected to increase by nearly a billion dollars.

There may be somewhat of a plateau in viewership numbers but there's still lots of money to be made.

Report: New NFL TV deals could be coming within the next two weeks - ProFootballTalk

Per Ourand, deals with CBS and NBC are “virtually done.” Each network will pay roughly $2 billion per year to keep their current packages.

Ourand reports that FOX has been “pushing back” on the asking price of $2.25 billion per year, more than double its current rate of $1.1 billion annually. Ourand writes that the current gap isn’t enough to jeopardize the deals.

Last week, Ourand reported that a deal is in place between the NFL and Disney for Monday Night Football. The league took affirmative steps to deny that report. Some believe that the NFL wants to preserve its ability to announce the deals on its own, with no advance leaks. Disney is expected to pay in the range of $2.6 billion annually. The package will put ABC back in the Super Bowl rotation, and it’s expected to include some ABC simulcast of Monday night games.

Finally, Thursday Night Football “appears to be headed” to Amazon Prime, per Ourand. Amazon is expected to pay a fee “well above” the current $730 million that FOX and Amazon currently pay together for the package.

Sounds like a good bit more money

As Merrith Merrith pointed out, no, it's not at all hopium. It's pretty much guaranteed. I still think the Dak deal is stupid for many different reasons, but the cap hit will be minimal when it goes from 25% under the current cap if he were to play it out to just over 10% if the tv deals are as advertised.

Fox and CBS are really only airing 1.5 games a week on average due to the stupid way they air games.

As far as hours of programming, sure. But they have many to choose from so they can get the best games into each market. I bet the pre games for the sunday shows get a lot ore eyeballs than whatever they do before the weeknight games. So that's another hour of programming.

I'm really curious about the future of NFL Sunday Ticket. I think there's one more year left on AT&T's deal but I'm really hoping it goes streaming after that. If they would let you pay for a single team that would be amazing.

The TV rights deals are weird, networks like CBS get a significant percentage of their total ad sales from the ads that air during NFL games... but also send a significant percentage of their operating revenue to the NFL for the rights to broadcast those games.

It's more a sign of the continued collapse of scripted network TV than anything else, but the way that none of the networks want to keep TNF illustrates how the situation isn't tenable long term.

Calculating how much Washington needs to sign its 8 draft picks in April

Muurloen Muurloen So...you probably need quite a bit less than you think to sign draft picks. Decent explanation in this article.
Interesting read. I honestly can't believe that these rookie cap hits are this low. Maybe this is why the Texans have had no problem cutting 2nd-6th rounders like no tomorrow.

My overall stance hasn't changed that he won't be traded due to cap reasons (for the next two seasons atleast) and not getting proper value in return for trading them. However these articles and websites explaining further about the cost of draft slots do allow the dumbasses on Kirby a bit more room to move than what I originally thought.

Thank Sam Bradford and Matt Stafford for this. It was their back to back rookie contracts that made the NFL introduce the rookie salary rule

Yea it used to be the opposite. It was getting so bad at the end with bradford, that teams were starting to devalue 1st overall, 2nd etc due to the massive amount of capital they had to cough up without that player having ever taken a professional snap, and then they would sometimes hold out on top of it, often leading to their star draft pick sitting out during camp.

This system is way better IMO.

And it was screwing over veterans who were at the bottom of the pay/talent scale as that money for the cap hit had to come from somewhere
