In the Earth War comic series and one other it was implied that they were basically super efficient at metabolizing anything. In fact they ended up on earth because there was a thing called "Xeno Zip" that was like a miracle drug the corps wanted them for. Same sources also filled in backstory that they were not actually designed but a very prolific race that reproduced like mad because there was an apex predator in their ecosystem that forced them to basically be like tribbles, eating everything and making more of themselves constantly. In that comic, the builders civilization (who liked like big elephant headed dudes) tried to harness them for the same purpose but got overrun by the xenos when they lost control of them as well and were basically how the xenos got off their home world in the first place. Too bad those stories were not made into moves, because they were way better.
Did they ever show this apex predator? Because I'd love to read a bit of comic about something that snacks on xenomorphs like doritos!

Yeah it was like some big 6 or 8 legged gilamonster looking dino that had natural immunity to the acid if I recall, they showed it once or twice in flashbacks in the comics.

Of course! They are the perfect killing machines. Unfeeling, remorseless. Their very blood damages everything. They are the biological equivalent of the self-replicating AI machines that similar sci-fi have ravaging the universe. They are the borg, they are the Tyranids.

That is why they make such great villains, in small scale encounter movies. It is a win just to escape with your life and burn everything behind you to ash.
Tyranids maybe. not self replicating machine though. Thats the Thing.

the Alien Xenomorphs have several major flaws. one, they reproduce via a queen. two, they require 2 stages of infancy. which is nuts. First an egg, then the egg hatches into a larva.. which lays eggs in hosts. wtf? thats an insanely shitty means of reproduction.

it would make WAY more sense if the facehuggers latched on to hosts, implanted themselves inside, and the "facehugger" body was then dropped, like a cocoon/vestigial body part.

the double egg as it stands, is a prime target for predication, or biological warfare on them. defenseless in egg stage twice. Also, lots of hormone processes that can be interrupted, with all this state changing via biological warfare.

the hive system has limited range. drones don't operate past a distance well.

they ARE almost perfectly deadly in space. the acid blood, tunnels, small spaces. they would not be that big of a threat when napalm and flamethrowers are involved. hell even in aliens we saw how regular guns tore them apart. the queen/hive system means they could be corralled pretty easy. even with wild animals getting egged with new queens. theres a limited distance an infected deer could travel.

Iirc, the writer of Alien said the acid blood was a way to effectively make the xenomorph invincible: it easily goes down to regular weapons, but you can’t kill it and risk the acid blood destroying the ship. So in this way, it’s unbeatable

Is it the director's cut? Not that it would really matter, but those few minutes added really make even better. This might actually get me to go to a damn movie theater again.

Invincible on a space ship? Not really, anyone could blow up the ship to stop them. They would be pretty shitty at colonizing a planet. Any infected ship would easily be destroyed before it got anywhere close to a planet or space station.

The writer meant for the crew of the ship

You couldn’t just simply shoot the xenomorph, otherwise the acid blood melts through the hull of the ship and causes a vacuum effect and some kind of explosive decompression, in theory.

the crew of the Nostromo were effectively fighting against an invincible opponent because, like a monster from fantasy, you couldn’t simply kill it with conventional weapons

Not really though, ships have different sealable compartments even on the ocean. In space where micro meteors are a thing it's important also. And something as simple as a kiddie pool can stop the strongest acid as long as it's PTFE.

That might be the DC. I know they republished it a few times under different names, but I thought that one had the cocoon scene. I could be completely wrong though.

I'd actually paid to go to the theater and watch all three of the films director cut versions back to back, as long as you had time to go take a piss between showings and there was beer available. I'd love to see aliens on the big screen. Only one I ever saw in the theater was Alien 3 and the fourth one which I don't consider it to be part of the series. That one was such a piece of shit, and I was so excited about seeing it back in high school. Ended up seeing it in a mall movie theater cuz it was the only place showing it, and every seat was taken. Had a big group of friends that all drove up to College Station, and I knew I was excited about it. Ask me afterwards what I thought and I just said Jesus Christ we should have gone and seen another movie.

ridley scott apparently considers the theatrical the best cut. the dc is normally listed at 1h55m. to add the new scenes he made other scenes shorter.

i recently watched the 2 hour hybrid cut, which i think has both extra scenes and original scene lengths

Man, I wish more writers nowadays cared as much about plausibility as these guys did.

I'll have to check that one out. I didn't realize the DC shortened some scenes or at least I didn't notice it.
