It'd be more epic but I think Raes quit very soon after AA was released. Like many people he spent more time preparing for a game than playing it when it was released. For more examples of this please see the Star Citizen, Camelot Unchained and Crowfall threads.

Happens a lot more often now. People burn them selves out on the games prior to it releasing, with so many "buy to play alpha/beta".

Yep. It's why I pretty much stay away from it and advise anyone I want to play with to do the same. It's one thing if you want to experience a really raw game in a constantly changing state, but I think people get hyped on alphas and think they're going to play it for years when it comes out.

People get a lot of joy of playing something that is exclusive. There are some liek Kedwyn who get burned the fuck out of games. Others get in their typical 1-3 months of play and bounces; it just happens to be a few months before you play.

The only alpha/beta I played a lot was Rift. Outside that I beta'd a few games just to see what's up with them.

Not sure I would say "buy-in alpha/beta" is exclusive.

As for this, game, I remember people in alpha/beta grinding away trying to get the higher end items, and I could only shake my head.

LOL. Uh, no. I did take a break for a few weeks when the economy was out of control, and only logged in long enough to make enough gold on my farm to buy my monthly apex. I am only level 53, cuz grinding the library makes me want to shoot myself. But, we are running Serpentis daily, and hunting reds nightly.

I played in Alpha to learn the game, and I don't get burned out. I do get tired of Trion and XL butchering a game with so much potential, but at least a few things seemed to be improving.

Except ArcheAge alpha was way better than beta or live. More competitive and more fun.

Oh cool, who are you on West? Are you with Aquanauts?

That's true and a problem I think. ESO was the same way, the alpha was better than release. It's hard to imagine it being more competitive though.

Castle sieges were more balanced in Alpha. Several castles changed hands. There was no level 55 and it was before the Battlerage, Shadowplay, and HP changes that was supposed to increase TtK but in fact made everyone die a lot faster.

Yeah the castle changes into release were an awful idea. I was more commenting on how in alpha I think people played less seriously. Then again people's willingness to gear up makes the game less competitive because people who generate a lot of wealth lay waste to everyone else. And I say this as someone with celestial/divine gear.

Yeah, I'm an officer in Aquanaut.
What's your ign?

Is this game any good, and is Kyrios the server people here play on still, as per OP?

I might try it out sometime so just wondering.

Can't imagine trying to jump into the game brand new. The gear gap has to be pretty insane.

Maybe PRX played less seriously, but Wicked, Forestcrow, and OT were going HAM, with a little bit of involvement from TWO and Bushi.

I'm pretty tolerant of bullshit in MMOs, tbh.

I'm not sure I would play regularly or anything, I just figure if I give it a shot at some point, I'd rather be on a server with some people I might know rather than alone.

AA is a lot of fun but there's two big problems:
1. If you want to compete at the high levels and be a real force you need to spend some thousands of hours building your gear set, or thousands of USD.
2. There's too many safe zones and PvP is too hard to find. You can go out on the seas (And Raes' guild, Aquanauts does this a lot!) but a lot of times you just run around and can't find people.

If you just wanted to roll on Kyrios, level up, participate etc etc, you can and have fun doing it. But anytime you run into well geared players it's not even a real fight. And even being one of those people is annoying because unless you fight a geared player you don't feel like you win a fight legitly.
