I'd expect a lot of tech improvement in FIFTEEN YEARS

Imagine the best looking games in 2007 compared to now. 2007 was when the original Modern Warfare came out, along with the butt of all GFX jokes -- Crysis. Crysis still looks pretty good, but compared to some of the stuff in work using UE5? Holy fuck not even the same sport anymore.

Also damn 2007 was a baller ass year for games. Mass Effect, BioShock, Assassin's Creed, Halo 3, Orange Box, God of War II, The Witcher. The origin for a lot of long running franchises right there, including the already mentioned Crysis and CoD4. Yes CoD was a thing before that but CoD4 made the franchise what it is today.

Here is a good video comparing the cgi between the movies and highlighting the CGI improvements

TLDW: less gloss, much more detail and everything is zoomed out with less fog to give the world a much bigger feel. ITs actually really impressive how much its improved.

i dunno, to me the most amazing CGI ive seen is what they did in those Mando episodes of Boba Fett. just seeing blue space kitties clearer isnt really something i would need to run to the box office for.

one interesting problem for Avatar 2 will be theater calibration. IIRC 3D Movies darken the colors a bit in the source to correctly do their polarizing trick with real 3D glasses so to compensate the projector has to do some stuff to look right on screen. Most theaters nowadays go through staff faster than retail stores so nobody knows how to do shit other than push a few buttons, so most rooms aren't correctly calibrated. muted colors, too dark, defocus issues, etc. Especially since you'd have to re-calibrate the screen every time you switch from 3D back to regular, which I doubt most theaters do nowadays especially ones that switch between 3D and regular on the same screen on the same day.

AMC is upgrading all its projectors starting this year so hopefully Cameron and that tighten up standards but I wouldn't be counting on it. I expect we'll see a lot of frustration this fall that a lot of screens are gonna look not great in 3D.

With all the clout that Disney has + Cameron, I can't believe they can't do like George Lucas did with Return of the Jedi when he made THX and told theaters they needed to meet his standards or they didnt get the reels.

Also, regarding this movie, I just read that Kate Winslet (and maybe Sigourney Weaver?) both have underwater shots where she broke Tom Cruise's single breath for a shot record. Kate was under for like 7 minutes and change. I can't wait to see what Cameron puts out, good or bad.

James Cameron has made a lot of really good movies. Trailer could have been 15 seconds of a blue person taking a dump and I’d still be in to see this. I’ll watch aliens again afterwards if it sucks.

The technical knowledge of this guy is next-level... "everything's so much more detailed"

This will be but it will be because its making money a couple months into 2023. If you are wondering if anyone gives a shit about Avatar, go see the mess that is the lines for the Avatar rides at animal kingdom. Its insaaaaaaaaaaane.

Heres what I'll tell you, I dont think Avatar is the best movie or a particularly great movie but it was a good sci-fi blockbuster that I am super happy I saw on a gigantic Imax (one of those real mammoth stadium ones). It was the first film like it that made 3D into something that actually worked and it was technologically impressive. Hell most CGI looks worse then it does and its what 13 years old? (god im old). Ill go see this on the mammoth Imax again simply because I want to see how Cameron improved filming underwater

the avatar ride at disney is an insane experience. the seat "breathes" while you are flying.

it is the best visual experience at disney
rise of resistance is the best "immersive" experience.
guardians of the galaxy is the best coaster i have ever been on it's insane.

i'll see the movie because it's cameron, and i did like the first movie.
