Avatar made all the money it did because it was the first use of the new age 3D tech.
It was the only reason I went to see it. The 3D in it delivered for sure.

A bunch of tiny little things worked to its advantage. A huge chunk of ticket sales were 3D IMAX which are a lot more than regular especially back in 2009. It "only" made $760m domestic but made over $2 billion international, and China wasn't even as big a factor back then but it made insane $$ in Europe due to the US dollar being crazy strong back in 2009, soon after the global recession where investors were fleeing foreign investments and parking everything into US treasury bonds. It also released Dec 2009 which gave it a lot more legs to run for a lot longer, it stuck in IMAX theaters for 4+ months which rarely - like NEVER - happens anymore, stuff cycles out after 3 weeks tops.

as far as IMAX goes, isn't that right when IMAX started to get popular as well? i don't even remember there being any other movie at that time that would even take advantage of it.

Most movies still dont. iirc very few "IMAX" movies are actual IMAX format. Theyre just slightly enlarged screens.

yeah, for the most part imax and 3d is gimmicky unless it's done with very specific equipment. mechanically speaking, avatar was done very well in that regard. there are VERY few movies that are worth the experience of imax and avatar is arguably at the top of the list.

I love that people are now talking about the Bucky Paradox inasmuch as they reference 'Hot Tob Time Machine'. Since Sebastian Stan was in that movie does that mean that there's a Sebastian Stan in the MCU along with Bucky?

Valkyrie isn't a goddess, she is literally... a valkyrie. A group of maidens serving under Odin who would escort those who died in battle and worthy to Valhalla. Just like every other Asguardian she lives longer than humans but isn't immortal. You can be a retard and say "hur durr there should only be white characters in the Thor MCU because thats what reality was", ignoring the fact that you know, the Norse didn't actually meet any of their gods, they didn't really live on a different planet and were a race of super beings who all spoke modern English, yadda yadda.

Beyond that you are ignoring the fact that the Norse did trade and encounter Africans regularly, in fact there is a single word in ancient Norse for a dark color, "blar", which translates into either blue-black, black or blue. Guess what color the frost giants are described in all the Norse texts? Its also been genetically proven that ancient Vikings had a shit load of mongol and Sami DNA in them, and a few of their Mongol hybrid leaders had very dark skin and asiatic features including the Varangian Guard who were elite Viking troops serving the Byzantium Empire which had connections all over the world.

Yes, Captain Marvel is a monstrosity because of her intro, her powers, the way she dips in and out randomly, that stupid "WOMYN ASSEMBLE" moment, her Dyke haircut, etc. Saying the same thing about Valkyrie just means you are kind of a retard, she's a well developed character since Thor 3 who has a solid backstory, has a power level we can understand, and is pretty consistent with her motivations and actions.

It was still goddamn ridiculous casting an African chick for a Nordic goddess.
This isnt a grey area. Your mental gymnastics to try and defend it are amusing though. I mean, goddam that was a lot of effort to try to say "there were black vikings". (Spoiler: no there werent)

And while Idris Elba is a great actor, his casting as Heimdall was fucking absurd and his casting as gunslinger was an over the top parody of SJWism.

When they cast a movie about African warriors, notice how they cast 100% black people to play them? All I ask is them same attention to detail when its a race of Nordic warriors. Either we ignore race in casting (which makes zero fucking sense; a fat flash, a skinny unathletic superman, an ugly trans-woman wonder woman, a black valkyrie) or we pay attention to race in casting.

Got around to seeing this. I knew it was not going to match IW (how could it?), but it was fine for what it was. Time Travel, especially what appears to be easily replicated Time Travel that can be used to res dead anybody, is a horrible thing to toss into your universe, but they used it well as satisfying entertainment. Its going to be ridiculous to hand wave it away later on, however. Cap shenanigans aside, the biggest whole in their Time Travel rules was Thanos jumping to the future and ending up in their time line (he should have only ended up in his own future, which would be a separate timeline), but we all wanted to see Super Grimace Round Two, so....

Time Travel aside, I had three main issues with the movie which are mostly personal nitpicks. Main one is that they took a deep well written villain and turned him into a one note monster with unrelatable motivations. This is probably the biggest letdown from IW for me, personally. It also detracted from his interactions with the heroes in the final act. Second one was them ignoring obvious issues with their Time Travel plot device in that the very first trip they take should have been to right before the snap to ask Pym for fuel for the device. I think they should have gone the route of somehow only being able to manage one jump (maybe involving Wong and the wizards) and getting the time stone and that being the sole means of jumping around, maybe making having that stone a requirement for taking things from the past. This would have closed the door on time travel being used as a cop-out down the road, since they would have to dump the time stone. If the average movie goer thinks of something like that, then your writing is sloppy.

Last bit was the SJW shit being shoehorned in so obviously. Now, there are ways to do it non-challantly, and they even managed to do that with the gay dude in the support group. Though I have to wonder if Cap was thinking "We lost half the people, faggot, take one for the team and go knock up a woman!". Then there is the Valkyrie shit (she is nutty cultist IRL, but unlike Tree Larson, she can act and is likable) as Brunhilde, the entire Wakanda thing, that uncharismatic carnivorous plant thing that is MJ in the new Spiderman movies, and other things that were pointed out in the run up to the next MCU wave. The biggest crime is being subject to Tree Larson's forgettable Captain Marvel movie which added literally nothing beyond stealing thunder from the decade long established characters in the series. Instead of Hulk going full beast mode and dropping Thanos' flagship, we got Captain Smugcunt steamrolling it. And the whole thing reached maximum cringe levels when the entire Marvel Pussy Patrol gathered and locked pussy lips to form Pussytron, only to fail. The difference between that scene and the Witch/Widow/Sinead Wakanda scene in IW is just fucking jarring and so obviously agenda pushing. And its not going to stop anytime soon, unless the new Woke Wave starts losing money. Even then, tanking Star Wars was not enough to even get Kennedy dumped, so who knows?

Those issues aside, great bookend, but a letdown from IW. If I rate IW a 10, then I have to say this is 8.5, with most of the good being RDJ, Evans, and the Big Thorbowski. Scarjo and Renner were also on their A Game this movie and I found the entire Hawkeye arc the best one of the movie. Unlike Black Panther or Captain Lesbian, he did not fumble the football when he had it. I would go see a Hawkeye movie in a theatre on the strength of Renner's performance in this movie alone.

Valkyrie in particular was pretty good starting off as a bitchy drunk exile, then ending up in hiding in Norway leading the remaining Asgardians while Thor was a drunk slob, then riding a badass Pegasus against Thanos' army she got who fucking knows where.

Captain Marvel is worth bitching about. She doesn't develop at all and starts off with the same bitch personality Valkyrie had without the character flaw of being a drunk coward who abandoned her people.

I think SJW token hires are the least of our worries now, it's SJW Mary Sues. Get ready for all female Avengers where Scarlet Witch gives all the men get dick cancer for some reason because she can't resurrect Vision, so Captain Marvel, Valkyrie, Wasp and Shuri have to save them while bitching at each other constantly because they all have the same twitter SJW personality (introducing She-Hulk and Hawkeye Daughter who are also like this). Scarlet Witch obviously has to be the bad gal because she has a normal personality.

That's why she had more screen time than GotG in Endgame. Honestly, her character is fuck all, who gives a shit, should be sidelined. I'm amazed by how much development is being forced on her.
Rhodes on otherhand, barely anything. He'll even Falcon, Winter Soldier barely a squeak.

the van has access to the quantum realm, all the "time machine" is,,,is a souped up quantum realm access device the KEY item is that wrist/hand band that is the "TIME GPS" device, thus, using any quantum realm access device, they can use it to travel through time.

I just want to add that if you want an ass kicking female character who is well written with a descent story arc, then Nebula might be one of the best written female characters in the MCU (definitely in this movie). She was also well acted and not sexualized like other characters the tumblr cunts complained about. Being able to see her original personality contrasted against her redeemed one was well done. I am glad she got a lot more screen time than Captain Smugcunt or the entirety of Pussytron.

They hired an Ass Double for Tree Larson and every other female character generally has leather ass pants and super model styled hair. Nebula is in good physical shape, but is a robot and not really dolled up like the others. And that jacket thing is because Olsen REEEEed to get it changed. She still let her tits out to play though with a pushup, which is just another double think moment. I would love to have been in the room when some exec at Disney had to tell bREEEEE that they were hiring an ass double for her. That had to have been a hilarious convo.
