Wonder if you could program in a fixed wing hover using ArduPlane etc . . .

I am not really big on the idea of a stalled / flop landing like most of the foamies I have seen. And manual wont be possible all the time due to the fields etc where we would be (huge rock clods, sometimes under water etc etc). But if it could be made to hover, I could just grab it out of the air. Lol. And that means no net / sky hook retardation either.

Lucky for you, Ardupilot recently released a build for "Quadplanes".
QuadPlane support in APM:plane 3.5.0 DIY Drones

Or if you want to invest a tiny bit more $$, you could get a flexrotor

Flexrotor is the one I referenced earlier that you had posted and I couldnt find again.

Yeah, that one is the dream. Lol. Just need 200k to make that happen.

Fixed wings for mapping do not use gimbals, though there are a few options. I think the Skyranger from hobbyking uses a gimbal (edit -Volantex ranger, not sky ranger), and it can fit between the landing gear. I've also seen some flat servo gimbals for mapping fixed wings, but it needs a lot of space. I think I saw it in theX8(delta wing, not multirotor).

TheE38drones do reverse thrust landings now. Most of the RTF delta wings do kind of a tip-stall spiral. Some fixed wings (like theedit2??? -Skuais close, but not what I'm thinking of.Quanum Observerwas wrong name, not it either. Same thing as the Volantex ranger ) do some weird stall with the horizontal stabalizer. The isreal military drone that I posted a ways back does this, but I've never seen them in flight.

I program in the landing approach on my fixed wings if its an area that I went to alot, but I usually just put it in some sort of stabilized mode and landed manually.

edit: EVERYONE should have a dewalt. And sorry for the mess, the office is crammed full of shit right now.
Lachius, I added some links and edited this a bit, just wanted to make sure you saw it. I can't remember the name of the plane that has the entire horizontal stabilizer on a hinge that releases when you want to do a deep stall landing, but it looks really similar to the Skua. Hobbyking carries it / used to carry it.

The X8 was one of the 2 foam delta wing setups I was looking at the other day.

maybe they are a lot sturdier than I would imagine, but it just doesnt seem like a long term item?

What am I missing here? There is not 12k value in an ebee, or 200k value in a Flexrotor. What idiots are actually buying that shit for that cost?

I would imagine the foam is easily replaceable and not the reason it's so expensive.

I think you're getting a bargain on the flexrotor at 200k.

The eBee is overpriced if you're just looking at parts (which is why I built my own). After you start building your own, you'll understand why many people are willing to pay way more to have something ready to fly.

The X8 does not fly great, from what I hear. The X5 is a better mapper and easier to manage, but it's also very, very sensitive to center of gravity. I think your best bet would be the same planes I put together to start.

Or just listen to my recommendation and get a solo.

hey band what angle should i set the drone to take pictures at 45 degrees? (still have not gotten it, but from seeing your pictures from above and other "this is where we took pictures at" it looked to be 45)

default is straight down.

and damn the pix4mapper drone app looks EASY to use, i mean, seriously?
turn drone on
turn app on
press grid mission
press gps
set height
set angle
set overap%
adjust the flight area size
then press start and it flies itself on the plan you just set, then lands where it took off.

i mean that will take a max of 1 minute from start of setup to pressing start on the mission...

dddaaamn.

NADIR (straight down) for most maps. 45 degree downward angle for 3d models.

The flight itself is pretty damn easy (and getting easier every day). My complaint with the capture app & drone deploy last year was that the drone would stop and return to home if you lost connection, and it wouldn't let you resume where you left off. This was with the Phantom2.

With the Solo, I upload the whole flight path ahead of time, and it only returns if the battery gets low or if it finishes the mission....and I can continue a large mission after battery swaps.

It's pretty easy now to make a pretty map, but there are still a lot of annoying hangups when you're trying to do it for work.

told my boss (he went away) i got the drone and he went hmm

so for now, i'm on the hook for the price- at least until i prove it will work. reading the tutorial now for pix4dmapper.

pretty much everything we are going to do is going to be 3d. (using to get the topography of the ground.

Sounds good. Let me know if you need help. If possible, wait as long as you can to do the Pix4D pro trial. Iron out the kinks and get a little experience with the flight planning so that you're not wasting your limited P4D pro trial time.

If you want me to process some sets for you, upload them to google drive and send me a link.AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CORRECTING THE ALTITUDE INFORMATION IN THE APP.

I got to do a survey over a crime scene today.

It wasn't exactly "by the book", so I did it....for recreational?
Law Enforcement used a laser scanner for the investigation, and I'm sending them my results in the morning. Kind of sucks that I won't be able to see the laser scan and compare, but hopefully I'll be able to after the investigation is over and I don't have to wait for the trial. They're going to give feedback, though.

Nice, Kais!
Just out of curiosity, are you guys flying under a COA at the airport? Did they give you a copy?
