BSG is still probably among my top fav TV shows of all time, up there with TNG, DS9, B5, the first two seasons of Twin Peaks and the first five seasons of The X-Files. There is a lot of stuff that was a bit odd, true, but I tied it down to them trying to have some sort of futuristic semi-alien mysticism in it. It never really peeved me off. The final season and finding Earth did feel a bit rushed - but I always attributed it to them having the show cancelled and needing to tie up loose ends in a hurry.
There were also a lot of shit episodes, but again, that comes down to the way Americans make TV shows - needing 24 or so 45 minute episodes per season. That needs a lot of filler material.
The show also had some pretty good characters, many of them with some good character progression. Admiral Adama, great character. The drunken second, another good one with some good development. Lee Adama, solid guy. Gauis, quirky and often difficult to associate with (hate to love and love to hate?) but had some of the best moments in the series. Starbuck, many didn't like her, but I liked her in that good looking tomboy way - no idea WTF she was in the end (cylon, ghost, ??). The female school teacher president - great character that I loved to hate.
Also, one of my go-to goosebump moments in all of TV history is the S4 finale where the trial over Gaius ends, the Cylons jump in as everything is spooled down, you have the four Cylon reveals to the music All Along the Watch Tower, and then Starbuck coming back - all ending with an epic cliff hanger. Amazing.
And yeah, I can see here how it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think you need to be a bit closed minded to not see many of the good points it has. Definitely a "watch it once" show for Sci-Fi fans.
