What a newb, did you see him go off trail and run through all those bushes about 1:30? Lol, poser.

It's getting dark early and getting cold, so I've been trying to squeeze in as much trail riding as I can before the snow comes.

A little too much Hipstergram here, but I thought this pic came out pretty cool anyway. Once again that hill is steep as hell, and naturally it looks like I'm just riding down a little slope.

It's certainly awesome weather for riding right now though - foliage is killer and the crisp air is great until you stop and your own sweat makes you freeze your ass off, heh.

Also - holy shit the 2.25 Ardent in the rear is AWESOME. I went to a place today that was a shitload of hills, and had to power my way up a ton of leaf-covered inclines. My old WTB rear tire had some slippage even in the best conditions, but even on the really steep stuff this thing just bit right in. It's nice to have your legs give out before your traction does.

What are you running in front?
A 2.35 Schwalbe Hans Dampf. I like it, but may end up switching to another 2.25 Ardent instead. It's just a tad too big (edit: For my 80mm forks) - it tends to rub a little when I lean on it hard, and it's like a monster truck tire on anything hard pack. It's freakin' huge, it looks like a cartoon tire compared to the Ardent.

I signed up for this:Home Page - TrainerRoad.com

And it is fucking AWESOME. $10/mo, plus like $40 for a Garmin USB stick for my computer. The interval training is absolutely nuts, and 45 minutes turned into ~700 Strava-calories and completely jello'd legs. TrainerRoad is badass, it has a bunch of built in cycling training videos, or can integrate w/netflix or your own shit. You can either fullscreen it, or it floats on top of whatever else you're doing. Definitely makes the trainer a lot less boring.

That looks awesome, now I just need a trainer.

Anyone have any tips for winter-specific gear? I know i need stuff (last ride was a BIT too chilly), but I have no idea what and I'd rather not lose anything to frostbite.

just picked this up last week. beats the wind and very breathable. looks badass to see your breath come out on cold nights. it does seem slightly too large though and takes some constant adjusting.

Broke my ankle biking on the 29th of Sept. Surgery was on the 10th of Oct. Had X-rays at check up today and Dr. says he can't see any sign of a fracture and wants me to start walking in this cast/boot thing I am in. That seems quick for a bone to heal from what I have read and what he said. He originally told me it would be 6-8 weeks. Input?

Depending on the type of fracture, it could take upwards to a year to heal. But, yes, 6-8 weeks is generally how long a fracture takes to heal.

Bone was completely broken. He said without the surgery, it would have been hard for the bone to fuse.

Like I said, my bro was walking, albeit only for very short periods and with a cane, on his very similar break within 2-3 weeks because he misunderstood the surgeon's instructions. It was supposed to be completely elevated for 2-3 weeks, at which point he could start to get around in a wheel chair and stuff, and then hopefully by 6-8 weeks start walking. It healed great.

What I said a couple pages ago:

That really sucks Brad. Sounds like you have a very, very similar injury to what my bro got when he laid down his Ducati a few years back. His foot also got caught on the pavement, pinned underneath the bike in his case as I understand it. Spiral fracture of the tibia. He was given two options, one was a hip to ankle cast for six months or some shit, the other was surgery to insert a rod from his knee to his ankle, along with some screws and plates. That was sold as having a much quicker recovery time. He was walking on a cane within 2-3 weeks of the surgery, although of course with a lot of pain. He's also tough as shit. I think the doctor had told him 2 months before he was going to be walking around, he misunderstood and heard 2 weeks.

He says that for the most part, his leg is 100% now about 5 years on. Sometimes his snowboard boots or hockey skates bother him a bit where a pin/screw is. He plays hockey, jogs, and is otherwise fairly active. I don't remember how long it was until he was back up to 90% or so, but probably 4-6 months give or take.

Nothing useful to add here from me, but here's to a speedy recovery man.

I have been walking on it the last few days. My ankle popped yesterday while walking and I cringed to brace for pain but there was actually relief. The only pain I seem to be feeling is the swelling from tissue damage. The last 2 nights I have slept without that heavy ass cast/therapeutic boot and I have not slept better. Dr. moved my therapy up 2 weeks. After doing a little more research, I found others have had their fibula healed within a 3 to 4 week time period. I was mostly paranoid of causing more damage and crippling myself for life. Not so worried about it now.

Thanks for the well wishes.

I'd say you're good to go for downhilling and mixed martial arts. Have at it.

PSA: Osprey hydro packs are AWESOME. I picked up this one today, in Large/Black:

Amazon.com: Osprey Packs Zealot 16 Hydration Pack with Reservoir: Sports Outdoors

The thing is fantastic - plenty light, air channel up the back so it vents well, pockets galore and best of all - unlike every CamelBak I've ever owned, it doesn't taste like plastic. I took it out of the box, rinsed out the bladder, filled it up and went riding and that was it. Definitely great for longer trail rides.

Oblig pic: It looks like I'm wearing a parachute, but it's actually not nearly as cumbersome as you'd think for a pack that size.
