Whats a good commuter bike in the 300-400 price range? Had a specialized mountain bike stolen last night...so I'm in the market. I'll also be investing in a sturdier lock, kryptonites good?

No lock is unbreakable but Kryptonite is a good lock, I think the New York or whatever is their beefiest lock and has had a bunch of good reviews. If you are in a high theft area, have a cable lock too and lock up your frame/rearwheel with the U-lock and use the cable to wrap to your front wheel.

Do you have a good Craigslist market in your area for bikes? If not, depends on the kind of bike you are looking for, I assume another MTB?

What type of commute? Year round? Sunny or Snowstorms?

I live in Seattle, so typical rain/sleet/snow mix year round commute. I was searching on craigslist but I'm not exactly sure what to search for, bike brand names seems ok but most of them are 1k+. The MTB seemed a bit heavy for what I was doing with it, just flat road with one big ass hill, so I could go with either a mountain bike or street.

Jamis? I don't know, I'd probably just get a crosscheck (Surly) for like $600 used, and get a set of wider cross tires for snow/shit and slicks for summer.

Surly crosscheck bike
That was about 10 seconds of looking. Can probably go cheaper for shittier. They are a sturdy-as-hell bike though.

If its Seattle and mostly city/road commuting, I'd go road bike, much faster than a MTB in my opinion. I'd check the used market for Jamis, specialized , surly maybe possibly pick up an older cannondale. I'm not all that familiar with geared bikes so I'm sure kuriin or someone will know more specifics on what to look for.

Edit: Ha, got beaten by So but I agree on the Surly, maybe even check in the cyclo cross market since those bikes usually have good clearance for.tires/fenders.

Double edit: found this, seems decent but on my phone so can't see everything.

Sweet those seem perfect. I was always pissed off at the road bikes passing me by even though I was working my ass off. We have a Recycled Cycles around here I'll go check out if they have anything like those Surlys. Thanks.

They're not titanium, aluminum or carbon, but you're not racing anyone. So hop on some Metal and get fucking rad.

Frist Winter Commute of the Year | Blog | Surly Bikes

The surly blog is pretty funny, but they occasionally have some bits on commuting. And it's extreme commuting to. Also they're nuts for riding a fixie in MN-winter. Like batshit insane.

Riding fixed is really good for extremely slippery conditions cause you have a whole lot more control/feel of the road.

You'll have really good feel of the road regardless of the gear type after you faceplant for the 17th time trying to ride in ice/snow.

stable has grown lately as I've started to race more and spend more time in the dirt

sold my SSCX bike after racing on it 5 times, it's just another disadvantage I didn't need. Bought a Focus Mares to replace it

because I was loving the trails so much, I bought a Surly Karate Monkey, still get my SS fix, but now I can run over shit. very stoked about this bike

You will always be prone to falling when on Ice/snow but multiple times I've had friends eat it going down some hill while I stayed up and the only difference was I was riding fixed and they weren't.

I have seen pretty good reviews on Specialized bikes and they aren't too expensive! Was thinking about getting one myself but theres so many different options out there.
