I would think the 54 at your height but its not really possible to ballpark a road bike fit like that.

Anything is going to be better than commuting on a FS MTB lol. I have a 2010 HiFi and I love it for rocky technical trails but it would be a bobbing mess on a road commute.

I'm like 5'11'' and I ride a 56cm... it really depends on you. They guys should be able to fit you on it.

Thanks for input, 56 would be way too big for me, my wife rells me I've short legs for my height heh

Yeah, it felt good sat in the seat...good distance to the bars etc. I was just wondering if down the road (no pun intended) would I be better with a bike thats bigger or slightly smaller. I'm maybe not wording this right, er..ok I sit on big bike, I can stand over it np, feels good for reach and what have you...slightly smaller frame, obviously can stand over np, but its slightly smaller to bars so might be slightly squashed etc...long term (and ive never really ridden road so have no experience here) would I be better with slightly smaller or slightly larger. I guess I will get them to order a 52 in so I can try them both back to back.

Edit for typos

The thing with bike sizing is it's impossible to do with just stand over height cause different people have different torsos/arms/leg length. There is a fit calculator that is pretty decent but takes some time and a friend to help. Can't link it since im on my phone.

Also, with bike sizing it's easier to grow a smaller frame with stem/seatpost than it is to shrink a large frame. 54 does sound right though.

I'd personally prefer to have a frame that's my size than a smaller one and have to get components to make the cockpit work. Some people seem to feel differently but I've always thought they are forcing it to save frame weight. Not trying to be some dude showing maximum seatpost exposure myself. If you aren't too stretched out extending your arms to the bars on the 54 I'd say stick with that size.

I'm completely serious on this: If the shop you're buying from can't fit you onto the bike your buying, don't buy it from them. It should take some time to fit you for it, especially if you're going to ride it as your commuter (and even more so if you do any actual gravel/cyclocross with the thing).

I'm not saying size down but if you are between two sizes, I find the smaller one is usually the best.

I do like a lot of saddle to bar drop though, I always forget that not everyone is used to riding road bikes.

The shop will fit me but they didnt have the 52 in stock, theyve got one at their other branch so I wil swing by and try it. Whichever size I go with they will set it up, helpfulness of the staff is why I prefer this shop to the other. Guy in the shop spent an hour chatting to me last, explaining about the various components on the different brands and helping me define what I wanted the bike to do.

All my stuff came in, I changed the slow-leaking tube, and took my bike out for a quick 30 mile ride today. Feels so good to be back on it! I ordered the portable pump that Apex recommended on the last page and I absolutely love it.

Two things I'm still missing are a seat and some kind of storage on my bike for wallet, keys, multi-tool, cell phone, and other misc. small things. Any recommendations on either of those? I'm going to be hitting Race Pace sometime this week and hopefully buying a seat there, since I want to see/feel it before buying it, but I'm curious if anyone has found a particularly comfy bike seat. I have a big ass so I think I need something a little wider than whatever stock seat is currently on my bike.

WTB Pure V or Race V are pretty nice MTB saddles out of the box. Comfortable but not some old lady saddle.

Just find an under the saddle sort of bag if that's all you need to carry.

As far as carrying gear, I just use a hydration pack. I actually have accumulated numerous different sizes over the years. One will basically hold a small bladder, my cell phone and a couple of credit cards, all the way up to one that would work as an overnight pack if needed. The one I use the most is my Camelbak M.U.L.E. It is generally overkill for most rides but I always pack enough gear/food/water/beer to turn a planned couple-of-hours ride into an all-dayer if necessary.

I also have an under-the-seat pack and it works well, but I reserve that for carrying the battery pack for my lights these day. Night trail riding is a ton of fun so long as you have a good enough illumination system.

Got a new GoPro this week and tried it out yesterday. This is a mostly downhill ride from UCSC towards the ocean. I think it came out awesome, and the scenery was amazing.

That's pretty awesome touring man.

I did keep expecting to see some animals though (only made it 2/3rd the way through the video though).

What's the battery life like? I just bought a gopro last night online and now I'm reading up about it and it's saying that the most you can get out of a battery is 2 hours(video or timelapse) which sounds like a complete piece of shit. I guess they have an external battery pack that lets you get up to 5 hours of recording but that's still pretty lackluster.

Not sure honestly. The longest I've recorded so far as about an hour maybe, because I don't record climbing stuff, just the downill and trails. I read that a lot of people pick this upAmazon.com: Wasabi Power Battery for GoPro HERO3, HERO3+ and GoPro AHDBT-201, AHDBT-301, AHDBT-302 (1200mAh): Camera Photobecause it's supposed to be a bit better than the stock one and it's a lot less expensive. The camera also comes with very few mounting options out of the box, which I didn't know. If you're using it riding you need to purchase the helmet, chest, or handle bar adapters. Otherwise it just comes with a couple sticky pads that I guess will let you mount it in your car.

Yeah I assumed I'd need to buy the handlebar mount. Pretty pumped to get it next week, got a gopro hero3+ silver for 199 from some coupon my roommate had.

Went into the other branch where they had both sizes. Lad I talked to was super helpful, I'm definitely the 54. Just have to order it now and pick it up. Just bought a house though and moving in about 4 weeks so will just wait until that shit show is over with.

Oh yeah, it has stupid ass toe clip pedals, what is this? the 80's? Going to bin them and throw some spd's on
the popularilty of clip pedals has risen with hipsters and people who don't want to wear "normal" cycling shoes.

I'm sort of surprised it came with pedals at all.
