That's like saying any movie shorter than 3 hours is garbage, i.e. it's a terrible opinion and limitation on your own enjoyment of things. Some of the best games out there can be lengthy, sure, but some of the best are nice tidy little packages.

At first I was offended by how exactly like Bioshock this was, but it's starting to spread out a bit and get more interesting. The presentation is certainly A+

1999 mode feels great. This is definitely fast paced. Pulling off headshots feels like it does in quake. So far I give it a 10

How do you get 1999 mode other than the konami code? I assume you unlock it after beating it? ..I may definitely have to play it through on 1999 mode right after this one. I'm close to finishing it on hard.

As for the birdcage/bird necklace.. I'm not quite so sure. Next playthrough I'm picking the cage. I kind of hope some of these options alter the game a slight bit, but so far I can't really tell, and I'm about 12 hours in.

Holy fuck the first Handyman fight was intense though. The whole little mini story behind handyman is kind of disturbing, you get to hear a bit about it from one of the Voxophones you find it and the lady is like "I'm not even sure he's my husband anymore, he was dying of stomach cancer but now he's.. this thing. Better a handyman than a dead man I suppose" and then the whole fight he runs around shouting "KILL ME" and the likes. Jesus.

I try to explore everywhere I can, and in the beginning I really struggled to find enough lockpicks to meet the number of pickable locks. Sometime around 5-6 hours in I started swimming in picks... Now I'm at 30 and really nervous I'm missing a ton of unlockable stuff. Anyone else have this experience?

Also I haven't been able to afford many upgrades, but I'm playing on 1999 mode. Is currency this scarce in the other difficulties?

Originally you had to beat the game to unlock it. Now you have the choice of using the konami code, but I assume you also unlock it after beating it once.

Ahh, I see. I'm def gonna start 1999 mode after I beat this.

I'm playing on Hard currently and currency is still very scarce. I have a shit ton of lockpicks as well, was in the same boat. Had to go forward, find like 2 more lockpicks and then backtrack alllllll the way back in order to unlock the shit. I'm rather certain I haven't missed any but I'm sitting at 30 as well.

Also, not sure if this is much a spoiler or not but
I JUST WATCHED ROBOT GEORGE WASHINGTON FIGHT ROBOT LINCOLN FUCK YES THIS GAME IS AWESOME

Not sure if you HAVE to beat it on hard to unlock it. I played through on Hard and beat it, and unlocked it. Being as how you started at that difficulty as well, you should be granted the same access. As far as the differences go, I'm having a hard time understanding what the real difference is. Admittedly I'm not too far, just rescued Elizabeth but past that I don't see much of a difference. Dying is uber hard on your wallet, but essentially that's all I've noticed....

Mid way through the game I got the vibe of too much like Bioshock, didn't last too long though thankfully. The beginning and the end are amazing, the audio is so god damned good.

What is it with people and the "too much Bioshock" statement. It is a Bioshock game and all of them feature some kind of crazy city with an oppressing dictatorship; it goes with the territory. Besides, it even makes sense within the story and Elizabeths constants and variables theory, "there's always a city and always a man".

So the verdict on this is a should buy for full price?

I am thinking about waiting, building a new rig this summer to replace my ~6 year old one. Perhaps I should wait and maybe get it on sale, then play it maxed on Ultra?

15 hours seems reasonable to me for a game like this. I don't expect every game to be ~40-60 hours, I just expect the experience to be high quality enough for a reasonable length of time, since there is always a trade off between the fidelity of the content and its length.

If you have a rig that is 6 years old and not building a new one until summer, you should wait until summer unless you can get it on a console. You will want to experience everything from a high end graphical stand point. The detail and DX11 effects are top notch on PC.

But... from a support standpoint, the effort put into this game is one of those rare events where I actually am happy I bought it at full price to get these guys as much reward as possible. It's rare we see this much work put in (or allowed to be put in) from a company/publisher. The atmosphere is absolutely amazing, the attention to detail. For the first 30 minutes I wasn't doing anything but exploring and finding these awesome little tidbits everywhere. I do not want to spoil them for you, but there are a ton of them.

So the alternative is to purchase now, see if there are any deals left for a couple free games, and wait until you finish your new rig. Or, build the new rig now on a credit card and play the game this weekend

And I agree, too much Bioshock is ridiculous. You have new weapons, new powers (fun and cool ones at that) and it's dripping of * NEW * atmosphere and story. Dead Space 3 could have taken a few lessons on how to repeat success in the same IP without milking the same gameplay to death or altering game style and sacrificing what got them there in the first place.

I would be just fine with Bioshock 4-9021 with the same style of play in completely different set pieces as long as the creativity and atmosphere of the world remain different and intact as it has been here. Now that we are seeing a city in the air, a city under water, I think the next best course of action would be a futuristic city on Mars

But... part of the charm is the old time music that plays in all these games. So they would need to include some of that.

Trying to avoid any spoilers while glancing through overall impressions.... But yes, 1999 mode feels great. Started playing the game on that difficulty so the learning curve + increased difficulty (?) + wallet rape of dying has made for a fun experience. Only just rescued Elizabeth too, but no complaints so far.

Yea I went to bed right after the Zep, so I haven't secured her. I've gone through two levels of not being able to afford upgrades, and I'm pretty sure I've looked everywhere. But I guess thats what 1999 mode is all about, and I love it. Will actually give the game replay-ability if I can only afford a half of the upgrades. Still haven't died but I'm moving super slow.

Also, if a body burns up does it not drop anything?

It drops a supply crate. Because of the limited ammo and salt (maybe, not sure how it is in lower difficulties) I've been melee'ing with the 70% burn / 3x range gear. Working pretty well. Set a few guys on fire, run and find some cover, pick them off as they chase. Rinse. Repeat.

This game is truly amazing.

10/10

The vigors and melee combat are hilarious. Elizabeth isn't just a cardboard cut-out that follows you around. The graphics are stunning. The music is phenomenal. The gore, my god, the gore.

Thank you Irrational.

Thanks for the advice. It sounds like the kind of game that would benefit greatly from waiting for a powerful rig, as opposed to a super nuts and bolts kind of game where power doesn't matter as much. I will pick it up when I build my new rig, sale or no sale. If I get lucky it will be less than full price.

Buying the computer now isn't a money issue so much as waiting for Haswell to come out issue. Plus I will be in the US in July, so I was just going to buy everything during my my vacation and put it together there. That'll save me anywhere from 25%-50%, Norway is damn expensive for some things.

These days, if this was a movie, it'd never get made.

As a warning to you guys playing on 1999 and just rescued Elizabeth, the game has certain parts that are justfucking hard. I've only encountered 2-3 so far, but if you know you're not some kind of pro FPS strategist, don't spend all your money on upgrades. The hard parts have me reviving 2-3 times @ 60 silver eagles a piece; it adds up fast.
